Leviticus 3

1The peace offering of the herd: 6of the flock; whether a lamb, 12or a goat.

1AND if his oblation be a sacrifice of 1peace offering, if he offer it of the herd; whether it be a male or female, he shall offer it 2without blemish before the LORD.

1 The word in the Hebrew signifies welfare, and prosperity, or requital; implying such a sacrifice whereby men requite God with thanksgiving for all the welfare and prosperity, peace, and blessing, He bestows upon them, in which regard it might likewise well be called, a requite-offering.

2 See Lev. 1 on verse 3.

2And 3he shall lay 4his hand upon the head of his offering, and 5kill it at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron's sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.

3 He, namely, who brings them to be offered.

4 See Lev. 1 on verse 4.

5 Namely, by the priest, as Lev. 1:5.

3And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by 6fire unto the LORD; thea fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is 7upon the inwards,

6 See Lev. 1 on verse 9.

a Exod. 29:13, 22.

7 Other, over, or, upon the entrails.

4And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the 8flanks, and the caul above the liver, 9with the kidneys, it shall he 10take away.

8 Understand, the intestines which lie in the flank of the belly, called Ilia by the Latinists.

9 Hebr. above, as Lev. 2:2, etc. That is, together with the kidneys which he was not only to sever, but likewise for the same end to take off the fat thereof, etc., and the caul of the liver.

10 Or, put off, pull off.

5And Aaron's sons shall burn it onb the altar 11upon the burnt sacrifice, which is upon the wood that is on the fire: it is an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

b Exod. 29:25; Lev. 6:12.

11 That is, which was to be offered there every morning and evening; or which was to be first offered after this offer. Or, upon the peace offering, that is, according to the manner and use of the burnt sacrifice. So Lev. 4:35; 5:12.

6¶And if his offering for a sacrifice of peace offering unto the LORD be of the 12flock; male or female, he shall offer it without blemish.

12 That is, of sheep and goats, as appears by verses 7, and 12. See Lev. 1 on verse 2.

7If he offer a lamb for his offering, then shall he offer it 13before the LORD.

13 See Lev. 1 on verse 3.

8And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and 14kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron's sons shall sprinkle the blood thereof round about upon the altar.

14 That is, the priest; see Lev. 1 on verse 5.

9And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire unto the LORD; the fat thereof, and the whole rump, it shall he take off hard by the 15backbone; and the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards,

15 Understand hereby the uttermost part of the backbone, ending in the holy bone; called by Latinists Os sacrum.

10And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away.

11And the priest shall burn it upon the altar: it is thec16food 17of the offering made by fire unto the LORD.

c Lev. 21:6, 8, 12, 21, 22; 22:25; Ezek. 44:7; Mal. 1:12.

16 Hebr. bread.

17 Understand the flesh of the sacrifices which was to be consumed by fire, for the honor of God, even as bread or meat is by the mouth of man: or, which in part belonged unto the priests for to be eaten by them. See the places, Lev. 21:6, 8, 17, 21, 22; 22:25; Ezek. 44:7; Mal. 1:12.

12¶And if his offering be a goat, then he shall offer it before the LORD.

13And he shall lay his hand upon the head of it, and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle the blood thereof upon the altar round about.

14And he shall offer thereof his offering, even an offering made by fire unto the LORD; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards,

15And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away.

16And the priest shall burn them upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire for 18a sweet savour: 19all the fat is the LORD's.

18 See Gen. 8 on verse 21.

19 Accordingly no fat of any beast fit for the sacrifice was to be eaten by either the priest or the owner, but it must be hallowed and burned unto the LORD; see Lev. 7:23, etc.

17It shall be a 20perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your 21dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor 22blood.d

20 Hebr. institution of eternity. See Gen. 13 on verse 15.

21 They were forbidden to eat the fat of the beasts, not only what was offered to God in the tent of the congregation, but likewise what they killed at home for their own use. Yet, understand not all the fat indifferently, but peculiarly the grease, suet and tallow fat, growing and hanging on the end and of the films of muscles, and by cold becoming lumpish, hard and brittle, called adepts by the Latinists. Understand here especially that of the three sorts of animals expressed in Lev. 7:23, 24.

22See Gen. 9 on verse 4; Lev. 7:26; 17:10.

d Gen. 9:4; Lev. 7:26; 17:10, 14.
