Leviticus 24

1The oil for the lamps. 5The shewbread. 10Shelomith's son blasphemeth; his sentence; and the law of blasphemy. 17The law of murder: 18of damage. 23The blasphemer is stoned.

1AND the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Command the children of Israel, that they 1bring unto thee pure oil olive 2beaten for the light, to cause the 3lamps to burn 4continually.

1 Hebr. take. That is, take and bring. See Gen. 12 on verse 15.

2 See likewise the command hereof, Exod. 27:20.

3 Of which there were seven in number, Exod. 25:37.

4 Namely, each evening.

3Without the 5vail of the testimony, in the tabernacle of the congregation, shall 6Aaron order it from the evening unto the morning before the LORD continually: it shall be a statute for ever in your generations.

5 Which made the partition of the Holy place and the Most Holy. See Lev. 4 on verse 6. This candlestick stood in the Holy Place on the south side, as the gilded table stood on the north side, Exod. 26:35.

6 Or, his sons, by his order, as appears in Exod. 27:21.

4He shall order the lamps upon the 7pure candlestick before the LORD continually.

7 That is, being made of pure and fine gold, Exod. 25:31, as also in verse 6 the table is called pure, whereon the showbread was laid, for being all overlaid with pure fine gold. Read Exod. 25:24.

5¶And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: 8two tenth deals shall be in one cake.

8 That is, of two gomers, of which one was the tenth part of an ephah. See Exod. 16:36.

6And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the LORD.

7And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread 9for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

9 See Lev. 2 on verse 2.

810Every sabbath he shall 11set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the 12children of Israel by an everlasting covenant.

10 Hebr. in the day of the sabbath, in the day of the sabbath. See of this manner of speaking, Gen. 7 on verse 2.

11 Which none may do but the priest alone.

12 Those who had offered the fine flour whereof the priests were to make the loaves or cakes.

9And ita13shall be Aaron's and his sons'; and they shall eat it in the holy place: for it is most holy unto him of the 14offerings of the LORD made by fire by a perpetual statute.

a Exod. 29:32; Lev. 8:31; 1 Sam. 21:6; Mat. 12:4.

13 Understand at the end of the week, when on the sabbath following they were taken off from the table, and new loaves laid on it in the place of the former.

14 This is likewise counted among the offerings made by fire, because the frankincense, which lay upon the same, was then kindled and consumed with fire before the LORD.

10¶And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was 15an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a 16man of Israel strove together in the camp;

15 It is probable that this Egyptian had embraced the Israelites’ religion, as many do hold; or else, he may only have sojourned among the Israelites as a stranger.

16 Concerning of both his parents.

11And the Israelitish woman’s son 17blasphemed the 18name of the LORD, and cursed. And they 19brought him unto Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:)

17 The Hebrew word here rendered as blasphemed properly signifies to pierce, to bore or to wound through, whereby the heinousness of this act is represented; he having, as it were, pierced God through with his blaspheming tongue.

18 Understand, the Name of the LORD or JEHOVAH, as the same is declared in verse 16 and Deut. 28:58. See of this Name Gen. 2 on verse 4.

19 Understand this of the judges who brought him to Moses to know how they should punish such an abominable blasphemer.

12And they put him in ward, that 20the mind of the LORD might be shewed them.

20 That is, according to His command. See Gen. 41 on verse 40 and Exod. 17:1.

13And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

14Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that 21heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him.

21 Namely, how he has cursed and blasphemed the Name of God. And these, as witnesses, thereby to testify that they had laid this sin of blasphemy truly to his charge, and that he, being really guilty thereof, was deservedly to be punished thus.

15And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his 22sin.

22 That is, the punishment of his sin; as He explains it in the next verse. See Lev. 5 on verse 1.

16And he that 23blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he 24shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall 25certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD, shall be put to death.

23 Hebr. pierced through, or stabbed, as verse 11, see at that place.

24 Hebr. dying be put to death. That is, he shall be put to death without fail, without any favor or mercy. So in the sequel.

25 Hebr. stoning stone.

17¶And he that 26killeth any 27man shall surely be put to death.

26 That is, who takes away one’s life with wounds and beatings. Compare Gen. 37:21.

27 That is, any man, any person of mankind. See Gen. 12 on verse 5 and Exod. 21:12.

18And he that killeth a beast shall make it good; 28beast for beast.

28 Or, soul for soul. Namely, a living beast or cattle for what he shall have killed.

19And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as he hath done, 29so shall it be done to him;

29 Namely, according to the course of the law, explained in the next annotation.

2030Breach for breach, eyeb for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath 31caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.

30 This was the law of requital, which was not to be executed by the particular persons, but with knowledge by the authorities. The Pharisees did misinterpret and expound it wrongly, for which they are reproved by our Savior, Mat. 5:38, 39.

b Exod. 21:24; Deut. 19:21; Mat. 5:38.

31 Hebr. given.

21And he that killeth a beast, he shall restore it: and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death.

22Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the LORD your God.

23¶And Moses spake to the children of Israel, that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses.
