Leviticus 22

1The priests in their uncleanness must abstain from the holy things. 10Who of the priest's house may eat of them. 14Of satisfaction to be made by him who eateth of them unwittingly. 17The sacrifices must be without blemish. 26The age of the sacrifice. 29The law of eating the sacrifice of thanksgiving.

1AND the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, that they 1separate themselves from the 2holy things of the children of Israel, and that they profane not my holy 3name in those things which they 4hallow unto me: I am the LORD.

1 Namely, not eating thereof when they are defiled with anything, or are otherwise unfit for it.

2 That is, those which were offered unto God by the children of Israel. See Lev. 5 on verse 15.

3 See Lev. 18 on verse 21.

4 That is said to be hallowed unto God, which is unto His glory set apart from the common use and dedicated or appointed for an holy end and purpose. So in the next verse. Likewise Exod. 13:2; Num. 3:13; Deut. 15:19. Other, because they hallow them unto me.

3Say unto them, Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that 5goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD, having 6his uncleanness upon him, that 7soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.

5 Namely, for to eat thereof.

6 Whereof was spoken in Leviticus 15 and also here in verse 4, etc.

7 The Hebrew word soul here translated is taken thus for man, or person, and so in verse 6, etc.

4What man soever of the 8seed of Aaron is a leper, or hath a running issue; he shall not eat of the holy things, until he be clean. And whoso toucheth any thing that is 9unclean by the dead, ora a man whose 10seed goeth from him;

8 That is, generation, or descendants. See Gen. 9 on verse 9.

9 Hebr. the unclean of a soul, that is, of a dead body. See Lev. 19 on verse 28.

a Lev. 15:2.

10 Hebr. the copulation of seed.

5Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing, whereby he may be made unclean, or a man of whom he may take uncleanness, 11whatsoever uncleanness he hath;

11 That is, with whatsoever uncleanness he may be defiled.

6The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even, and shall not eat of the holy things, unless he wash his flesh with water.

7And when the sun is down, he shall be clean, and shall afterward eat of the holy things; because it is his 12food.

12 Or, bread. See Lev. 3 on verse 11.

8Thatb which dieth of itself, or is torn with beasts, he shall not eat to defile himself therewith: I am the LORD.

b Exod. 22:31; Lev. 17:15; Ezek. 44:31.

9They shall therefore keep 13mine ordinance, lest they 14bear sin 15for it, and die 16therefore, if they profane 17it: I the LORD do sanctify 18them.

13 Hebr. keep my keeping or observe my observing.

14 See Lev. 5 on verse 1.

15 By reason of those holy things spoken of in verse 7. See Lev. 21 on verse 22, and so in the sequel.

16 Namely, in that sin, or in the punishment of their sin, as happened to Nadab and Abihu, Lev. 10:1, 2. Other, for them, namely, for the holy things spoken of in verse 7.

17 That is, those holy things.

18 Namely, the priests. See Lev. 21 on verse 8.

10There shall no 19stranger eat of the holy thing: a 20sojourner of the priest, or an hired servant, shall not eat of the holy thing.

19 That is, who is not of the priestly generation; such as were the rest of the Levites and the children of Israel. See verse 12; Mat. 12:4.

20 Understand such a one, as being come from abroad, who has taken up his dwelling or sojourning place for a time with the priests. Some do understand by these sojourners the menial servants, whereof we read Exod. 21:2, 3, etc.

11But if the priest buy any soul 21with his money, he shall eat of it, and he that is born in his house: they shall eat of his meat.

21 Hebr. with the buying (or purchase) of his money.

12If the priest's daughter also be married unto a 22stranger, she may not eat of an offering of the holy things.

22 That is, who is not of the priest’s family or generation, as verse 10.

13But if the priest's daughter be a widow, or 23divorced, and have no 24child, and is returned unto her father's house, asc in her youth, she shall eat of her father's meat: but there shall no stranger eat thereof.

23 See Lev. 21 on verse 7.

24 Hebr. seed. Thus this word is rendered in Gen. 4:25; 15:3; Lev. 20:2, etc.

c Lev. 10:14.

14¶And if a man eat of the holy thing unwittingly, then he shall put the fifth part thereof unto it, and shall give it unto the priest 25with the holy thing.

25 Other, shall render the holy to the priest, that is, the like of it in substance or value, for, that which was eaten once could not be restored. See Lev. 5:16.

15And they shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, which they offer unto the LORD;

16Or suffer them to bear the 26iniquity of trespass, when they eat their holy things: for I the LORD do sanctify them.

26 That is, the punishment of the guilt or trespass. As verse 9 and Lev. 5:1.

17¶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

18Speak unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them, 27Whatsoever he be of the house of Israel, or of the 28strangers in Israel, that will offer his oblation for all his 29vows, and for all his freewill offerings, which they will offer unto the LORD for a burnt offering;

27 Hebr. man man.

28 Understand such strangers as had embraced and made profession of the religion of the Israelites.

29 See of these, Lev. 7 on verse 16.

19Ye shall offer 30at your own will a male without blemish, of the beeves,d of the sheep, or of the goats.

30 See Lev. 1 on verse 3.

d cattle, oxen, bulls, cows*

20But whatsoever hath a blemish, that shall ye not offer: for it shall 31not be acceptable for you.

31 Hebr. not according to acceptance, or, well-pleasing, and so in the next verse. Understand not acceptable to the Lord. Compare herewith the annotation at Lev. 1 on verse 4.

21Ande whosoever offereth a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD to accomplish his vow, or a freewill offering in beeves or sheep, it shall be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish therein.

e Deut. 15:21; 17:1.

22Blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a wen, or 32scurvy, or scabbed, ye shall not offer these unto the LORD, nor make an offering by fire of them upon the altar unto the LORD.

32 See Lev. 21 on verse 20.

23Either a bullock or a 33lamb that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, 34that mayest thou offer for a freewill offering; but for a vow it shall not be accepted.

33 That is, sheep and goats.

34 Or, that thou shalt prepare.

24Ye shall not offer unto the LORD that which is bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut; neither shall ye make any offering thereof in your land.

25Neither from a 35stranger’s hand shall ye offer the bread of your God of any of these; because their corruption is in them, and blemishes be in them: they shall not be accepted for you.

35 Hebr. the son of the stranger, or, foreigner. Hereby God commands that the sacrifices to be offered by the strangers (see Ezra 6:8, 9, 10) were likewise to be perfect and without defect or blemish, as well as the sacrifices of the children of Israel.

26¶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

27When a bullock, or a sheep, or a goat, is brought forth, then it shall be seven days under the dam;f and from the eighth day and thenceforth it shall be accepted for an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

f mother-animal or bird

28And whether it be cow or ewe, ye shall not kill it and her young both in one day.

29And when ye will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the LORD, offer it at your own will.

30On the same day itg shall be eaten up; ye shall leave none of it until the morrow: I am the LORD.

g Lev. 7:15.

31Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the LORD.

32Neither shall ye 36profane my holy name; but I will be 37hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which hallow you,

36 That is, not cause the same to be blasphemed by doing something against My commandments.

37 That is, acknowledged and declared to be that God, Who punishes the transgressors and rewards the well-doers. See Lev. 10 on verse 3.

33That brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be 38your God: I am the LORD.

38 See Gen. 17 on verse 7.
