Leviticus 2

1The meat offering of flour with oil and incense, 4either baken in the oven, 5or on a plate, 7or in a fryingpan. 12The oblation of firstfruits not to be burnt. 13The salt of the meat offering. 14The meat offering of the firstfruits in the ear.

1AND when 1any will offer aa2meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine 3flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon:

1 That is, any man, or, person; as the word man is used Lev. 1:2. See Gen. 12 on verse 5.

a Lev. 6:14; 9:17; Num. 15:4.

2 That is, an offering which consisted in meat or flour, appertaining in part to the priest, and the rest being burnt with frankincense. See the following verses.

3 That is, sifted flour, the whitish part of it.

2And he shall bring 4it to Aaron's sons the priests: and he shall take 5thereout his 6handful of the flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, 7with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shallb burn the 8memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD:

4 Namely, meat-offering.

5 Understand of the meat offering, that is, the flour belonging to the meat offering.

6 Hebr. the fullness of his fist fists. Also Lev. 5:12.

7 Or, above all, as also Lev. 3:4, 10; 4:9, etc. That is, together with all the frankincense of the meat offering.

b Lev. 6:15.

8 An incense, so called, as putting God in mind (to speak after the manner of men) of the promises made unto the godly Israelites, and of the prayers which they put up to Him, which are compared to an incense mounting up, Psalm 141:2; Acts 10:4; Rev. 8:3, 4.

3And the remnant ofc the meat offering shall be Aaron's and his sons': it is a thing 9most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.

c Lev. 10:12.

9 That is, a most holy thing, or of singular and extraordinary holiness. So also verse 10. Exod. 30:36; Lev. 24:9, etc. It is a kind of expression, showing the eminence or excellence of the thing or person spoken of. Thus God is called the God of gods, and the Lord of lords, Psalm 136:2, 3; the Canticles, or Song of Solomon, is called the songs of songs, Cant. 1:1. Compare the annotation on Gen. 9 on verse 25.

4¶And if thou bring an oblationd of a meat offering bakene in the oven, it shall be 10unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, 11or unleavened 12wafers anointed with oil.

d offering, sacrifice*

e baked

10 Hebr. cakes of sweetnesses, and so in the sequel.

11 Or, and.

12 Or, pancakes, or, tarts.

5¶And if thy oblation be a meat offering baken in a pan, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil.

6Thou shalt part it in pieces, and pour oil thereon: it is a meat offering.

7¶And if thy oblation be a meat offering baken in the 13fryingpan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil.

13 Other, pan; that is, such as what is either boiled in the kettle, or fried in the pan.

8And thou shalt bring the meat offering that is made of these things unto the LORD: and when it is presented unto the priest, he shall bring it unto the altar.

9And the priest shall take from the meat offering a memorial 14thereof, and shall burn it upon the altar: it is an offering made by fire, 15of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

14 See on verse 2.

15 See Gen. 8 on verse 21, and Lev. 1 on verse 9.

10And that which is left of the meat offering shall be Aaron's and his sons': it is a thing 16most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.

16 See on verse 3.

11No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no 17leaven, nor any 18honey, in any offering of the LORD made by fire.

17 Understand this of the freewill offerings or sacrifices; for, in the thank offerings this was not observed, Lev. 7:13, nor in the oblations of the first fruits, or firstlings; Lev. 23:17, and here in the next verse.

18 The honey is likewise forbidden here as well as the leaven, because that, notwithstanding the sweetness thereof, it has that quality that it will make the dough or paste it is mixed with to become sour and make it rise, or be puffed up.

12¶As for 19the oblation of the firstfruits, ye shall 20offer them unto the LORD: but they shall not be burnt on the altar for a sweet savour.

19 See Lev. 23:17.

20 Namely, leavened, or mixed with honey.

13And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer 21the salt of the covenant of thy God to be 22lacking from thy meat offering: withf all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

21 That is, the salt shall put thee in mind of My covenant, whereby thou standest engaged to endeavor always for an untainted and uncorrupted life, Mark 9:49.

22 Hebr. to cease.

f Mark 9:49.

14And if thou offer a meat offering of thy firstfruits unto the LORD, thou shalt offer for the meat offering of thy firstfruits green ears of corn 23dried by the fire, even corn beaten out of full ears.

23 Or, singed, scorched.

15And thou shalt put oil upon it, and lay frankincense thereon: it is a meat offering.

16And the priest shall burn the 24memorial of it, part of the beaten corn thereof, and part of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

24 See on verse 2.
