Leviticus 1

1The burnt offerings, 3of the herd, 10of the flocks, 14of the fowls.

1AND the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him 1out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,

1 Understand the tabernacle, into which God came to speak unto His people, Exod. 29:42, and they were to come to inquire of God, and to hear Him speak, Exod. 33:7.

2Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you 2bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and 3of the flock.

2 Or, shall sacrifice, also verses 3, 5, etc. Understand this offering of the people’s part, and not of the priests.

3 This word comprehends not only sheep, but goats also, as appears in verse 10. See likewise Gen. 12 on verse 16.

3If his offering be a 4burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without 5blemish: he shall offer it 6of his own voluntary will 7ata the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 8before the LORD.

4 See Gen. 8 on verse 20.

5 One that has no defect in the body. See Lev. 22:20, 21, 22.

6 By these words it is plain that here is spoken of free will offerings, such as were made not after the usual set order, but as everyone thought good to do of his own accord, according to his own occasions, either by way of seeking and praying to God, or of giving thanks unto Him.

7 Where the altar of the burnt offering stood; as is to be seen in verse 5.

a Exod. 29:10.

8 Before the tent of the congregation in whose inmost part the Ark of the Covenant was placed, which was a token of God’s present co-habitation, Exod. 25:22, in which regard the tent is also called God’s house, 1 Sam. 3:15, as God likewise is said to be therein, Lev. 4:7.

4And he shall put 9his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted 10for him to make atonement 11for him.

9 Hebr. lean with his hand, namely, to testify by this action that he does consecrate this offering unto God, surrendering and presenting the same, as in lieu of himself, for to find favor for himself with the LORD through the future sacrifice of the Messiah, Who is typified by this sacrifice. See Exod. 29:10.

10 That is, so that, who offers it, it may prove unto him to procure a lawful and acceptable sacrifice unto God.

11 That is, that it may signify and seal unto him the reconciliation, which would take place in the fullness of time through the Messiah, Rom. 3:25; 2 Cor. 5:19; Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:14, 19, 20.

5And 12he shall 13kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

12 Namely, the priest; or, he that offers it, by the priest, as God commanded it, Exod. 29:11, and was done likewise, Lev. 8:15. Or, after that they shall kill the young bullock, namely, by the priest.

13 The Hebrew word signifies properly to cut, or, pierce the throat.

6And 14he shall flayb the burnt offering, and cut it into his pieces.

14 Namely, one of the priests. See 2 Chron. 29:34.

7And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put 15fire upon the altar, and lay the wood in order upon the fire:

15 Hebr. give fire; to wit, of the fire which was to fall down from heaven when the first offering would be made upon this altar, Lev. 9:24, and was therefore to be kept continually. See Lev. 6:12.

8And the priests, Aaron's sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and 16the fat, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

16 Other, bowels, or, entrails: other, the corps, from which the head and legs are severed, and the bowels removed.

9But his 17inwards and his legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by 18fire, 19of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

17 The Hebrew word here used signifies properly that which is nearest to a thing, which is the inmost, or middle most part of it; and such are the bowels or entrails of the beasts.

18 That is, such as must be entirely consumed and devoured by the fire. See Exod. 29:18. Such was the burnt offering.

19 That is, very grateful and acceptable to the LORD, and wherewith He is very well pleased; which is said of the burnt offerings and sacrifices of the beasts, not in regard of themselves, but of the sacrifice of Christ, which signified them, and Who is properly the Sacrifice of a sweet smelling savor unto God, Eph. 5:2. See likewise Gen. 8 on verse 21.

10¶And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it a male without blemish.

11And 20he shall kill it on the side of the altar 21northward 22before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall sprinkle his blood round about upon the altar.

20 Namely, the priests, as verse 5.

21 That is, in the court on the right side of the altar of the burnt offering, as one went into the tent of the congregation.

22 See above on verse 3.

12And he shall cut it into his pieces, with his head and his fat: and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

13But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water: and the priest shall bring it all, and burn it upon the altar: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

14¶And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves, or of 23young pigeons.

23 Hebr. sons of the doves or pigeons. Thus Lev. 12:6. As such is also called a young bullock the son of a bull, Gen. 18:7 and above in verse 5, a young ass the son of a she-ass, Gen. 49:11, a young unicorn the son of the unicorn, Psalm 29:6.

15And the priest shall bring 24it unto the altar, and 25wring off his head, and burn it on the altar; and the blood thereof shall be wrung out at the side of the altar:

24 Namely, the sacrifice of the fowl, as verse 17.

25 Or, pinch off the head with the nail.

16And he shall pluck away his crop with his 26feathers, and cast it beside the altar on the 27east part, 28by the place of the ashes:

26 Other, filth, dung, ordure; namely, that which is contained within the crop and intestines.

27 In reverence to the Divine Majesty, as far from the Ark of the Covenant as might be, the same standing westwards in the Holy of Holies.

28 To where the ashes of the sacrifices were brought, to be carried afterwards outside the camp with the other filth gathered thereabouts. See Lev. 4:12; 6:10, 11; 8:17.

17And he shall cleave 29it 30with the wings thereof, but shall 31not divide it asunder:c and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

29 Namely, sacrifice, as verse 15.

30 Or, between his wings.

31 That is, do not dismember the fowl, nor divide it into pieces, as they did with the other animals, the fowl being only to be cleft in the middle between the wings.
