THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
*JOHN

John 2

1Christ turneth water into wine in Cana of Galilee: 12he goeth to Capernaum; 13thence to Jerusalem, where he driveth the buyers and sellers out of the temple: 18he giveth his own death and resurrection for a sign: 23many believe in him because of his miracles, but he would not trust himself unto them.

1AND the 1third day there was a marriage in Cana of 2Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

1 Namely, after His departure towards Galilee, whereof is spoken in John 1:44.

2 That is, situated in Galilee, about three hours’ journey from Nazareth. It is so called to distinguish it from another Cana, located near the borders of Phoenicia, in the tribe of Asher, Joshua 19:28.

2And both Jesus was 3called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 Or, invited.

3And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4Jesus saith unto her, 4Woman, 5what have I to do with thee? mine 6hour is not yet come.

4Christ calls His mother such, not out of contempt, but to show that her motherly authority in things concerning His office, must not avail, but only His Divine call.

5 Gr. what is to me and thee? An Hebrew phrase, bearing with it a reproof. See 2 Sam. 16:10, 19:22.

6 That is, it is not yet the suitable time.

5His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

6And there were set there six waterpots of stone, aftera the manner of 7the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three 8firkins apiece.

a Mark 7:3.

7 That is, after the manner of purifying of the Jews, whereof see Mat. 15:2, 23:25; Mark 7:4, 8; Luke 11:39.

8 Every firkin, as some reckon, held about an hundred and twenty pounds of liquid matter; each pound being reckoned for half a pint, each firkin would hold about fifteen pottles. So that the water-pots of two firkins would hold about thirty pottles, and of three firkins forty-five pottles.

7Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the 9governor of the feast. And they bare it.

9 Gr. architriclinos, that is, the overseer of the dining-room, whom is commonly called among us the master or the steward of the feast.

9When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10And saith unto him, Every 10man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have 11well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

10 Gr. human being.

11 Gr. when they are become drunk, that is, are become merry with drink. For, this word does not always signify that which is properly called drunkenness, but also a liberal taking of drink, without excess, to cheer a man. See Gen. 43:34; Haggai 1:6.

11This 12beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his 13glory; and his disciples 14believed on him.

12 That is, the first of all the miracles that ever He did in public; or, the first which He did in Galilee, as may be gathered from John 4:46, 54.

13 That is, the power and majesty of His Divine nature.

14 That is, were thereby confirmed in the faith that He was the Son of God and the true Messiah; for, that they did believe already appears out of John 1:41, 46, 50.

12¶After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his 15brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

15 That is, His kinsmen. See Mat. 12:46.

13¶And the Jews’ 16passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

16 This was the first passover after His baptism, on which He purged the same temple once more about His last passover. See Mat. 21:12; Luke 19:45.

14Andb found in the temple those 17that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

b Mat. 21:12; Mark 11:15; Luke 19:45.

17 See hereof Mat. 21 on verse 12.

15And when he had made a scourgec of small cords, he 18drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ 19money, and overthrew the tables;

c whip*

18 Gr. He cast them all out.

19 The Greek word signifies small coin, wherewith great money is exchanged.

16And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

17And his disciples remembered that it was written, Thed zeal of thine house hath 20eaten me up.

d Psalm 69:9.

20 Or, hath devoured me.

18¶Then answered the Jews and said unto him, Whate sign shewest thou unto us, 21seeing that thou doest these things?

e Mat. 12:38; 16:1; Mark 8:11; Luke 11:29. John 6:30.

21 Or, wherefore.

19Jesus answered and said unto them, 22Destroyf this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

22 Gr. unloose, or, undo.

f Mat. 26:61; 27:40; Mark 14:58; 15:29.

20Then said the Jews, 23Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

23 Namely, after that the Jews were returned from the Babylonian captivity. Whereof see Ezra 4; 5; 6, and Josephus, Antiq. lib. 11, cap. 1; 2; 3; 4.

21But he spake of 24the temple of his body.

24 That is, of His own body or human nature, in which dwells, as in its temple, the fullness of the Godhead bodily, Col. 2:9, and whereof this temple at Jerusalem was a type.

22When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples rememberedg that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

g Luke 24:8.

23¶Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many 25believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

25 Namely, with a bare knowledge and assent, without the right basis and confidence, as appears from the following verse.

24But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,

25And needed not that any should testify of man: forh he 26knew what was in man.

h 1 Sam. 16:7; 1 Chron. 28:9; Psalm 7:9; 103:14; Jer. 11:20; 17:10; 20:12; John 6:64.

26 Namely, as being true God and the Knower of the hearts, Rev. 2:23.
