THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
*JOHN

John 17

1Christ prayeth to his Father to glorify him; 6and to preserve his apostles in unity of faith, 15and from all evil; 17and to sanctify them with the word of truth: 20and for the perfect union of all believers, and their admission to a share of his glory in heaven.

1THESE words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, 1thea hour is come; 2glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify 3thee:

1 Namely, which Thou hast ordained for My suffering.

a John 12:33; 13:32.

2 That is, display in His deepest humiliation that He is Thy Son; which likewise was done in His suffering by many miracles, Mat. 27:46, 51, 52, 53, and especially by His resurrection, ascension and sitting at the right hand of His Father. See the annotation on verse 5.

3 That is, declare the glory of Thy justice and mercy and Thy other attributes by suffering and dying for sinful people, Rom. 3:25, 26 and 5:8.

2Asb thou hast given him power 4over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast 5given him.

b Psalm 8:6; Mat. 11:27; 28:18; Luke 10:22; John 3:35; 5:27; 1 Cor. 15:25; Philip. 2:10; Heb. 2:8.

4 Gr. of all flesh, that is, over all people.

5 Namely, to reconcile unto Thee and to save, Eph. 5:25.

3And thisc is 6life eternal, that they might know thee 7the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou 8hast sent.

c Isa. 53:11; Jer. 9:23.

6 That is, the way and means to come to eternal life is the true knowledge of God and of the Mediator Jesus Christ, namely accompanied with a firm trust; as this word is also taken, Isa. 53:11.

7 Or, Thee alone. In the original it is not said that the Father is only the true God, but that the Father is the alone, or the only true God. For, the true God is but one only Divine Essence subsisting in three Persons. And thereby are excluded all other false gods, which the heathen worshipped, Jer. 10:11; 1 Cor. 8:6; Gal. 4:8, 9, but not the Son nor the Holy Ghost, Who are also this only true God, and are so called, John 1:1; Acts 5:4; Rom. 9:5; 1 Cor. 3:16, 17; 1 John 5:7, 20, and elsewhere.

8 Namely, as the only Mediator and Savior, without Whom no man can be reconciled or united unto God, Acts 4:12; 1 Tim. 2:5.

4 Id have 9glorified thee on the earth: Ie have 10finished 11the work which thou 12gavest me to do.

d John 13:32; 14:13.

9 Namely, by My doctrine, life and miracles.

e John 4:34; 19:30.

10 This He says because a great part of that work was now accomplished, and the remainder immediately after would forthwith be accomplished.

11 Namely, of the reconciliation and redemption of people.

12 That is, hast ordained and commanded.

5And now, O Father, 13glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory whichf I had with thee 14before the world was.

13 That is, set Me at Thy right hand in the full exercise of My Divine glory, which I have indeed had with Thee from eternity as the Lord of glory, John 12:41; 1 Cor. 2:8, but which in the time of My humiliation, for the salvation of mankind hath, as it were, been hidden in My human nature. See Philip. 2:6, 7, 8, 9.

f John 1:1, 2; 10:30; 14:9.

14 That is, from eternity, Eph. 1:4.

6I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou 15gavest me 16out of the world: 17thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

15 Namely, not only to be faithful apostles and witnesses, but also to save them, verse 2.

16 That is, out of the common heap of men.

17 Namely, by Thine eternal election, 2 Tim. 2:19.

7Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are 18of thee.

18 That is, are taught and done by Me, through Thine inspiration, command and power.

8For I have given unto them 19the words which thou gavest me; and they have 20received them, andg have known surely that I came out 21from thee, and they have believed that thou didst 22send me.

19 That is, the doctrine.

20 That is, embraced and believed.

g John 16:27.

21 That is, that I am Thy Son begotten by Thee from everlasting, Psalm 2:7; Micah 5:1.

22 Namely, into the world, to be the Mediator and Savior, Heb. 5:5.

9I pray for them: I pray not 23for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are 24thine.

23 That is, not for all persons in the world without distinction, but for the elect and faithful, Rom. 8:33, 34.

24 See verse 6.

10And allh mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am 25glorified 26in them.

h John 16:15.

25 Namely, by their faith, doctrine and works.

26 Or, by them.

11And now I 27am no more in the world, but these 28are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, 29keep through 30thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be 31one, as we are.

27 That is, I shall shortly depart out of the world, in respect of My bodily presence.

28 That is, abide yet a while on the earth, and shall herein be subject yet to many infirmities and temptations.

29 Namely, in all troubles and afflictions.

30 That is, by Thy power and for Thy sake, seeing they must endure those troubles for Thy sake.

31 Namely, in spirit, will and love towards one another, as We are one in Essence and will.

12Whilei I was with them in the world, I 32kept them in thy name: thosej that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, 33but the son of perdition; 34that thek scripture might be fulfilled.

i John 6:39; 10:28; 18:9.

32 Namely, not only from outward troubles, but also from falling away and temptation.

j Isa. 8:18; Heb. 2:13.

33 Or, save the son of perdition, namely, is lost; as such Judas is called, as also the antichrist, 2 Thes. 2:3, because he was prepared for destruction by God’s righteous judgment, Rom. 9:22.

34 That is, and so the Scripture is fulfilled. See Psalm 69:25, 109:8. See further Acts 1:16.

k Psalm 109:8.

13And now come I to thee; and these things I speak 35in the world, that they might have 36my joy fulfilled 37in themselves.

35 That is, as long as I am yet with them in the world.

36 That is, wherewith I rejoice over them, and wherewith they rejoice in Me.

37 That is, in their soul and mind.

14I have given them 38thy word; andl the world hath 39hated them, because they are not 40of the world, even as I am not 41of the world.

38 That is, taught and revealed Thy doctrine.

l John 15:19.

39 Namely, for Thy Word’s sake.

40 Gr. out of the world, that is, are not worldly minded.

41 Gr. out of.

15I pray not that thou shouldest 42take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them 43from the evil.

42 Namely, for this time, seeing I must yet after this make use of their service.

43 That is, from the temptation of Satan, of sin and of the world.

16They are not 44of the world, even as I am not 45of the world.

44 Gr. out of.

45 Gr. out of.

1746Sanctify them through thy truth: thym word is 47truth.

46 That is, renew them more and more by Thy truth; and make them more and more suitable to be ministers of the New Testament, 2 Cor. 3:6.

m John 8:40.

47 That is, this truth, whereby people are sanctified, namely, the doctrine of the Gospel, James 1:18.

18Asn thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also 48sent them into the world.

n John 20:21.

48 Namely, to preach Thy Word and truth throughout the whole world.

19Ando for their sakes 49I sanctify myself, that they also might be 50sanctified 51through the truth.

o 1 Cor. 1:2, 30; 1 Thes. 4:7.

49 That is, I give up Myself for an holy sacrifice.

50 That is, may obtain by the power and merits of this My sacrifice the remission of their sins, and the sanctification of the Spirit, Heb. 10:10, 14.

51 That is, truly; not as was done heretofore by the external ceremonies of the law, but indeed fulfilling that which was typified by those ceremonies. Or, in truth.

20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through 52their word;

52 That is, My Word preached by them.

21That they all may be one;p as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one 53in us: that 54the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

p John 10:38; 14:11; Gal. 3:28.

53 Or, with Us; that is, that they, being united unto Us by a true faith, Eph. 3:17, may also by true love be moreover united to one another.

54 That is, that they, who do not yet believe, may thereby be allured to acknowledge and embrace Me for the true Messiah, and My doctrine for a Divine doctrine, 1 Peter 3:1, 2.

22And 55the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that 56they may be one, even as we are one:

55 Namely, to be God’s children and My fellow heirs, Rom. 8:17.

56 Namely, not only the apostles, but also all those who shall believe in Christ through the Word, verse 20.

23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect 57in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved 58them, as thou hast loved me.

57 Or, unto one, that is, that they, being united unto Me by faith, may also thereby be united unto Thee, John 14:23; 1 John 1:3, and that their union with Us by faith and with one another by love, may also have her perfect members.

58 Namely, as Thy children, 1 John 3:1.

24Father,q59I will 60that they also, whom thou hast given me, 61be with me 62where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast 63given me: for thou lovedst me 64before the foundation of the world.

q John 12:26; 14:3.

59 That is, I desire or request. See Mark 10:35.

60 That is, where I shall be shortly, in My glory in heaven, 1 Thes. 4:17; Rev. 3:21.

61 Namely, the apostles and all other believers.

62 Namely, in due time, in soul immediately after death, 2 Cor. 5:8; Philip. 1:23, and also in body after the general resurrection, Philip. 3:21.

63 Namely, by eternal generation as Thine only begotten Son, John 5:26, and whom Thou shalt also give Me according to My human nature, when I shall be glorified at Thy right hand, Eph. 1:20, 21; Philip. 2:9.

64 These words may be joined either to the word given, or to the word lovedst. See similar, Rev. 13:8.

25O righteous Father, 65ther world hath not known 66thee: but I have known thee, ands these have known that thou hast sent me.

65 Gr. and the world, that is, the greatest multitude of the world.

r John 15:21; 16:3.

66 Namely, as it ought. For, even the Gentiles have had some knowledge of God, Rom. 1:19, 21.

s verse 8; John 16:27.

26And I have declared unto them thy name, and will 67declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in 68them, and 69I in them.

67 Namely, yet more and more, when I shall send the Holy Ghost upon them.

68 That is, may also extend itself to them, and the power and sense thereof may be poured out into their hearts, Rom. 5:5.

69 Namely, by My Spirit and grace.
