THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET
JEREMIAH

Jeremiah 43

1Johanan and the captains discrediting Jeremiah's prophecy carry him and the rest of the people into Egypt. 8Jeremiah by a type prophesieth the conquest of Egypt by the Babylonians.

1AND it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking unto all the people all the words of the LORD their God, for which the LORD their God had sent him to them, even all 1these words,

1 This is recounted in the previous chapter.

2Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, 2saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there:

2 In the plural number.

3But Baruch the son of Neriah setteth thee on against us, for to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry us away captives into Babylon.

4So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah.

5But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, that were returned from all nations, whither they had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah;

6Even men, and women, and children, and the king’s 3daughters, and every 4person that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah.

3 See Jer. 41:10.

4 Or, soul; that is, men, persons. See Gen. 12 on verse 5.

7So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even to 5Tahpanhes.

5 See Jer. 2 on verse 16. This place is held to be the same city which is called by the heathen writers Daphne.

8¶Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

9Take great stones in thine hand, and hide them in the clay in the 6brickkiln, which is at the 7entry of 8Pharaoh’s house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah;

6 Or, brickery, brick-house.

7 Or, door.

8 See Gen. 12 on verse 15. This seems to have been Pharaoh-hophra, as Jer. 44:30.

10And say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will send and 9take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, mya10servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that 11I have hid; and he shall spread his 12royal pavilion over them.

9 Or, fetch. Hebr. take. See Jer. 37 on verse 17.

a Jer. 25:9; 27:6.

10 See Jer. 25 on verse 9.

11 By the ministry of My servant Jeremiah.

12 Or, beautiful tent. The Hebrew word is only found here, and seems to have the name from exceptional beauty.

11And when he cometh, he shall 13smite the land of Egypt, and deliver suchbas are 14for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity; and such as are for the sword to the sword.

13 As Jer. 46:13, etc.

b Jer. 15:2; Zech. 11:9.

14 Understand: is appointed and ordained. See Jer. 15:2, 3.

12And I will kindle a 15fire in the 16houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall 17burn them, and carry them away captives: and he shall array himself with the 18land of Egypt, as a shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go forth from thence in peace.

15 That is, bring about desolation, destruction. Compare Jer. 15:14.

16 That is, idolatrous temples.

17 Nebuchadrezzar shall burn the idols of the Egyptians, and their houses or temples, and shall carry the Egyptians away captive.

18 That is, he shall take the riches and spoil of Egypt to himself for his own profit and benefit, and carry them away with him as easily and conveniently as a shepherd puts on his shepherd’s coat to cover himself therewith, and wrap himself in it against the cold. He shall be laden, covered and as it were be wrapped roundabout with the spoil.

13He shall break also the 19images of 20Beth-shemesh, 21that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire.

19 As 1 Kings 14:23.

20 That is, of the house of the sun, called by the heathen writers Heliopolis, that is, the city of the sun, where they committed abominable idolatry. This city is conceived to have been also called by the Hebrews On, Gen. 41:45, 50.

21 There was another Beth-shemesh in Israel by the borders of the Philistines, 1 Sam. 6:12.
