ISAIAH

Isaiah 12

A joyful thanksgiving of the faithful for the mercies of God.

1AND 1in that day 2thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: 3though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.

1 Namely, at the time of the Kingdom of Christ, when the Gospel shall be preached throughout the entire world.

2 Namely, ye My chosen people, ye believers in Christ.

3 That Thou, Who wast angry with us, hast let Thine anger fall. Thus it is said in Rom. 6:17: But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, etc. Other, that thou having been angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and that thou comfortedst me.

2Behold, God is my 4salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH 5is my strength and my 6song; he also is become my salvation.

4 Or, my Savior, or, my Salvation, that is, He is the Author of my salvation.

5 That is, He Who gives me strength. See Exod. 15:2; Psalm 118:14

6 Or, psalm, that is, it is God to Whose praise and glory I do compose and sing psalms and songs of praise.

3Therefore with joy 7shall ye draw watera8out of the wells of salvation.

7 That is, ye shall rejoice as those do who, being exceeding thirsty, find water to quench their thirst. Understand here by water all manner of spiritual graces and mercies which God gives to his well-beloved, especially salvation by Jesus Christ. Compare herewith Mat. 5:6; John 6:54; 7:37.

a John 7:37, 38.

8 That is, out of the preaching of the Holy Gospel, in which is published and declared the salvation purchased by Christ.

4And in that day 9shall ye say, 10Praise the LORD, 11call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, 12make mentionb that his name is exalted.

9 Namely, ye who shall be converted unto Christ.

10 See 1 Chron. 16:8; Psalm 105:1.

11 Or, proclaim his name, or publish his name with a loud voice.

12 That is, cause it to be remembered among posterity, that His Name is greatly to be praised and glorified.

b John 17:1, 4, 6, 26.

513Sing unto 14the LORD; for he hath done 15excellent things: this is known in all the earth.

13 The Hebrew word signifies both to sing with the voice, and to play upon musical instruments.

14 That is, to the glory of God.

15 Hebr. He has done glory, or highness, or excellence.

6Cry out and shout, 16thou inhabitant of Zion: 17for 18great is 19the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

16 That is, ye people of God, being at home in His church, which is here called Zion.

17 Here is shown the cause or matter of the hymns or songs of praise of the godly.

18 That is, the true God, Who is honored in an holy manner and served by His people of Israel. See Psalm 71 on verse 22.

19 That is, He has shown His power, and made it appear by His glorious deeds, which He has done among you.
