THE PROPHET
HABAKKUK

The prophet Habakkuk foretells that God had decreed the Jews were to fall into the hands of the Chaldeans, because of their manifold and heinous sins, yet so, that these also, the Chaldeans themselves, would not escape unpunished for their own sins and wickedness. Then the prophet inserts a very devout and fervent prayer, beseeching God the Lord, that the misery, which was to befall the people of Judah and Israel, might be rather a Fatherly chastisement, and not a final destruction, chapter 3. It is uncertain, when this prophet lived and prophesied. Divers of the learned hold it was in the time of Josiah his successors, or of Manasseh, in regard that the sins which he reproves, are very like to those of Manasseh, and the people living in those days. Thus much appears however, from chapter 1 verse 6 that he lived and prophesied before Jerusalem was laid waste by Nebuchadnezzar. Some passages of this prophecy we find quoted in the New Testament, as Acts 13:41; Rom. 1:17; Gal. 3:11, as also Heb. 10:38.
