Genesis 5

1The genealogy, age, and death of Adam, 6Seth, 9Enos, 12Cainan, 15Mahalaleel, 18Jared, 21Enoch, who is translated, 25Methuselah, 28Lamech, 32and Noah.

1THIS is the 1book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, 2ina the likeness of God made he him;

1 Or, narrative, register, account, enumeration of the births or generations, that is, of them that were born of Adam; understand not of all, but those only of whom the Lord Jesus Christ is born after the flesh by the line of Seth, Luke 3, and who for the most part maintained the true worship of God among them until the time of the deluge.

2 That is, after His own likeness. See Gen. 1:26, 27.

a Gen. 1:26; 9:6; 1 Cor. 11:7.

2Maleb and female created he them; and blessed them, and called 3their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

b Gen. 1:26; Mat. 19:4; Mark 10:6.

3 As well the woman’s as the man’s; notwithstanding the difference of the origin of both, namely, that Adam was created of the earth, and Eve of Adam’s rib.

3¶And Adam 4lived an 5hundred and thirty years, and begat a son 6in his own likeness, after his image; and 7called his name Seth:

4 That is, when Adam had lived so long, or was so many years old, then he got a son. And so we are to understand the same phrase in the sequel.

5 Hebr. thirty and hundred years; and so both here and elsewhere is the lesser number mostly set before and the greater put after in the Hebrew tongue.

6 In opposition to God’s image and likeness, after which Adam was created, here is put now the image and likeness of Adam, after which Seth is born. The image of God was perfect, but after the fall the image of Adam was totally corrupted; whereby all men now, naturally born out of Adam, are sinful, miserable and subject to death. See Rom. 5:12.

7 Namely, by reason of the words which Eve spoke when she got this son. See Gen. 4:25.

4And the days of Adam afterc he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

c 1 Chron. 1:1.

5And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty 8years: and he died.

8 Or, nine hundred years and thirty years, according to the use of the Hebrew language, but in our translation the word years is but once.

6And Seth lived an hundred and five years, andd begat Enos:

d Gen. 4:26.

7And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters:

8And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.

9¶And Enos lived ninety years, and begat 9Cainan:e

9 Hebr. Kenan. Luke 3:37 he is also called Cainan.

e 1 Chron. 1:2.

10And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:

11And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

12¶And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat 10Mahalaleel:

10 Luke 3:37 the Greek has Maleleel.

13And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters:

14And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.

15¶And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared:

16And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters:

17And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.

18¶And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and 11he begat 12Enoch:f

11 Compare with Jude verses 14, 15.

12 Hebr. Chanoch.

f 1 Chron. 1:3.

19And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

20And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.

21¶And Enochg lived sixty and five years, and begat 13Methuselah:

g Jude verse 14.

13 Hebr. Methuschalach.

22And Enoch 14walkedh with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

14 That is, he led a holy life before God with great zeal and exceptional steadfastness, separating himself from the impiety and evil morals of the world. See the same kind of speaking, Gen. 6:9; Micah 6:8, and compare Jer. 12 on verse 3.

h Heb. 11:5.

23And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

24And Enoch walked with God: 15and he was not; fori God took him.

15 This is explained Heb. 11:5, that he was taken away, and translated into eternal life.

i 2 Kings 2:11; Heb. 11:5.

25And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech:

26And Methuselah lived after he begat 16Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters:

16 Hebr. Lemech.

27And all the days of 17Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.

17 This Methuselah was the oldest of all men that lived on the earth recorded in Holy Writ.

28¶And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:

29And he called his name 18Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, 19because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.

18 In the New Testament he is called (in the Greek) Noe, Luke 3:36; Heb. 11:7; 1 Peter 3:20. The two Hebrew verbs noach and nicham, both are used here, have some resemblance together. The one signifies to rest, from which the name Noah is taken, the other to comfort, wherewith the reason is shown of giving that name, for Lamech doubtless foresaw through the Spirit of the Lord that Noah was to be employed for some special work.

19 See Gen. 3:17, 18, 19; 4:11.

30And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:

31And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.

32And Noah was 20five hundred years old: and Noah 21begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

20 Hebr. a son of five hundred years: that is, Noah was so many years old, or was entering into the five hundredth year of his age. This phrase one finds very frequent in Scripture. See Gen. 7:6; 11:10; 17:17, etc.

21 That is to say, he began to beget: as Gen. 11:26. For these three sons were not born in one year; but first Japheth, and then Shem, and at last Ham. See Gen. 9:24; 11:10. Shem is put here in the first place, as a pious progenitor of our Lord Jesus Christ after the flesh, together with all the Hebrews. See Gen. 10:21 etc.
