Genesis 36

1Esau's family in Canaan. 6His removal to mount Seir. 9His generations in mount Seir. 15The dukes which descended of his sons. 20The sons and dukes of Seir. 31The kings of Edom. 40The dukes that came of Esau, according to their habitations.

1NOWa these are the 1generations of Esau, who is 2Edom.

a 1 Chron. 1:35.

1 That is, his descendants. Other, births.

2 See Gen. 25:30.

23Esau took his wives of the daughters 4of Canaan; 5Adah the daughter of Elon the 6Hittite, and 7Aholibamah the daughter of 8Anah 9the daughter of Zibeon the 10Hivite;

3 See Gen. 26:34.

4 That is, of the Canaanites. See Gen. 10:18, 19; 12:6.

5 Or, Ada; in Gen. 26:34 called Bashemath.

6 One of the people of Canaan, descending from Canaan, the son of Ham; Gen. 10:15.

7 See Gen. 26 on verse 34.

8 Or, Ana. Otherwise called, Beeri, Gen. 26:34, but do understand, assumed Judith is there mentioned and this Aholibamah were one and the same woman.

9 That is, his grandchild. Thus Athaliah is called as well the daughter of Omri, her grandfather; as the daughter of Ahab her immediate father. See 2 Kings 8:18, 26.

10 See Gen. 10:15, 17. The Hittites and the Hivites seem to have lain so contiguous one to another, and intermixed, that their names might easily be taken the one for the other.

3And 11Bashemath Ishmael’s daughter, 12sister of Nebajoth.

11 Gen. 28:9 called Mahalath.

12 See of this woman, Gen. 28 on verse 9, and of Nebajoth, Gen. 25:13.

4And Adah bare to Esau 13Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare 14Reuel;

13 One of Job’s friends had this same name, called Eliphaz of Teman, Job 2:11; so that some perceive him to be descended from this Eliphaz here by means of his son Teman, whose name is recorded in verse 11 among the children of Eliphaz.

14 This name Jethro’s father had likewise, the father of Moses’ wife, Exod. 2:18; Num. 10:29.

5And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and 15Korah: these are the 16sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land of Canaan.

15 We read of another Korah in Exod. 6:21; Num. 16:1.

16 He had daughters likewise, verse 6, but their names are not mentioned.

6And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the 17persons of his house, and his 18cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into 19the country 20from the face of his brother Jacob.

17 Or, the souls, that is, persons, as Gen. 12:5.

18 By cattle here understand the smaller sort, and by beasts the bigger animals; as likewise Gen. 34:23; 2 Kings 3:17.

19 Namely, to Seir, as follows.

20 Or, before the face; that is, by reason of Jacob. This was brought to pass by God’s secret disposing and ordering it thus, since his father had, according to God’s command, promised Jacob the inheritance of the land of Canaan, which Esau therefore stood obliged to clear for his brother.

7For 21their richesb were more than that they might dwell together; and the 22land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.

21 Namely, of Jacob and of Esau. Though Esau dwelt in Seir at this time, nevertheless it seems that being reconciled with this brother, he returned and took up his habitation in the land of Canaan; but being both strangers in the country, and not having room enough for all their cattle, Esau afterwards returned again into Seir.

b Gen. 13:6.

22 That is, the land of Canaan. See Gen. 17 on verse 8.

8Thus dweltc Esau 23in mount Seir: 24Esau is Edom.

c Joshua 24:4.

23 See Gen. 14 on verse 6.

24 That is, Esau is the same man who is also called Edom.

9¶And these are the generations of Esau the father 25of the Edomites in mount Seir:

25 Hebr. of Edom.

10These are the names of Esau’s 26sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.

26 That is, of his children, children’s children, or descendants.

11And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, 27Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

27 Hebr. Tsepho; also named Zephi, 1 Chron. 1:36.

12And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bare to Eliphaz 28Amalek: these were 29the sons of Adah Esau's wife.

28 The father of the Amalekites, of whom we read, Exod. 17:8; Deut. 25:17, and 1 Sam. 15:2.

29 See verse 10, and so in the sequel.

13And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and 30Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife.

30 See verse 33.

14¶And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau's wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

15¶These were 31dukes of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; duke Teman, duke Omar, duke 32Zepho, duke Kenaz,

31 These princes did not rule successively after one another’s death, but much together at one time, each one over their peculiar people; nevertheless they have not been mighty princes, but they were the heads or the chief among their generations, as governors or leaders.

32 Hebr. Tsepho.

16Duke 33Korah, duke Gatam, and duke Amalek: these are the dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Adah.

33 This one is to be distinguished from the other Korah, a son of Aholibamah, verses 5, 14, 18. He may have been the grandchild of Eliphaz.

17¶And these are the sons of Reuel Esau's son; duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah: these are the dukes that came of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife.

18¶And these are the sons of Aholibamah Esau's wife; duke Jeush, duke Jaalam, duke Korah: these were the dukes that came of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau's wife.

19These are the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these are their dukes.

20¶Thesedare the sons of 34Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah,

d 1 Chron. 1:38.

34 This Seir had been the first prince there, from whom the land also was denominated. This generation or genealogy is inserted here because of Esau and Eliphaz, with their descendants, their alliance with them, by means of marriages; and that the dominion of the land of the Horites was devolved afterwards unto the offspring of Esau; by comparing of this verse with verse 2, it seems that the Horites and Hivites are taken for one and the same people.

21And Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan: these are the dukes 35of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom.

35 Hebr. of the Horites.

22And the children of Lotan were Hori and 36Hemam; and Lotan's sister was 37Timna.

36 He is in 1 Chron. 1:39 called Homam.

37 See verse 12.

23And the children of Shobal were these; 38Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, 39Shepho, and Onam.

38 He is called in 1 Chron. 1:40, Alian.

39 Likewise called Shephi, 1 Chron. 1:40.

24And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: 40this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father.

40 That is, he was the first who devised the joining of a mare to an ass, from which came a third kind, half ass half horse, the use whereof continued ever since; notwithstanding that God has forbidden the mixing of several kinds of beasts, Lev. 19:19.

25And the 41children of Anah were these; Dishon, and 42Aholibamah the daughter of 43Anah.

41 That is, son, or children. Thus the plural is taken for the singular. See Gen. 21 on verse 7.

42 See verses 2 and 5.

43 This is another person than who was mentioned in verse 20.

26And these are the children of 44Dishon; 45Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

44 Or, Disan.

45 Called Amram, 1 Chron. 1:41.

27The children of 46Ezer are these; Bilhan, and Zaavan, and 47Akan.

46 Hebr. Etser.

47 Other, Jakan, 1 Chron. 1:42.

28The children of Dishan are these; 48Uz, and Aran.

48 Hebr. Uts.

29These are the dukes that came of the 49Horites; duke Lotan, duke Shobal, duke Zibeon, duke Anah,

49 Hebr. of the Chorites, and so in the sequel.

30Duke Dishon, duke Ezer, duke Dishan: these are the dukes that came of Hori, 50among their dukes in the land of Seir.

50 Other, under their princes, or according to their principalities.

31¶Ande these are the 51kings that reigned in the land of Edom, 52before there reigned any king over the 53children of Israel.

e 1 Chron. 1:43.

51 Sprung from Esau’s posterity who dispossessed the Horites and changed their principalities into a kingdom.

52 Esau’s offspring blossomed early, and soon decayed; Jacob’s descendants, being long a growing, endured much longer, yea lasts forever in his blessed Seed, our Lord Jesus Christ.

53 Or, sons, descendants.

32And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name 54of his city was Dinhabah.

54 Where he was born. In the sequel the places of the births of these kings were assigned, which, having been several, it would seem those kings came not to the government by order of succession, but by election, or by power.

33And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of 55Bozrah reigned in his stead.

55 Hebr. Botsrah, a principal city in Idumea. See of it in Isa. 34:6; 63:1; Amos 1:12.

34And Jobab died, and Husham 56of the land of Temani reigned in his stead.

56 Hebr. of the Temanites, so called after Teman, the son of Eliphaz, of whom see verses 4, 11, 15; and of the country, Jer. 49:7, 20. Hence it seems also that Eliphaz of Teman was one of the friends of Job, Job 2:11.

35And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote 57Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith.

57 That is, the Midianites. See Gen. 25 on verse 2.

36And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.

37And Samlah died, and 58Saul of Rehoboth 59by the river reigned in his stead.

58 This is to be distinguished from Saul, the son of Kish, the first king of Israel.

59 That is, situated by the riverside, in distinction to another Rehoboth, Gen. 10:11.

38And Saul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.

39And Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, 60the daughter of Mezahab.

60 That is, grandchild; compare verse 2.

40Andf these are the names of the 61dukes that came of Esau, according to their families, after their places, 62by their names; duke 63Timnah, duke Alvah, duke Jetheth,

f 1 Chron. 1:51.

61 That is, descending from Esau, who after the kings had the government in Idumea, either together at one time, or in succession.

62 That is, not only of their persons, but likewise of their generations, families, and habitations, which were much named after persons.

63 This is here a man’s name, as also in verse 41 Aholibamah; and distinct of persons who are mentioned in verses 2, 5, 12.

41Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,

42Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke 64Mibzar,

64 Hebr. Mibtsar.

43Duke Magdiel, duke Iram: these be the dukes of Edom, according to their habitations in the land of their possession: he is Esau the father 65of the Edomites.

65 That is, of Edom.
