Ezekiel 46

1Ordinances for the prince in his worship, 9and for the people. 16An order for the prince's inheritance. 19The courts for boiling and baking.

1THUS saith the Lord GOD; The gate of the 1inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the 2six working days; but on the 3sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the 4new moon it shall be opened.

1 Where the altar of burnt offering was.

2 Compare Exod. 20:9. Some conceive that hereby is typified, that we see but afar off and as it were through a glass darkly in this life, but we shall see face to face in the life to come, on the everlasting rest or Sabbath-day, 1 Cor. 13:12; Heb. 4:9, 10, 11.

3 Compare Exod. 20:10, 11. Further Col. 2:16, 17.

4 Compare Isa. 66:23.

2And the prince shall enter by the way of the porch of that gate without, and shall stand by the post of the gate, and the priests shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall 5worship at the threshold of the gate: then he shall go forth; but the gate shall not be 6shut until the evening.

5 Hebr. bow down himself. See Gen. 24 on verse 26. Also in the next verse.

6 Compare Mat. 25:10, 11, 12.

37Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the LORD in the sabbaths and in the new moons.

7 Or, For the people, etc. Or, That the people of the land may worship, etc.

48And the burnt offering that the prince shall offer unto the LORD in the sabbath day shall be six lambs without blemish, and a ram without blemish.

8 Compare this new ordinance with the old, Num. 28:9, 10. The old was much less because the grace of the New Testament (as some observe) is much more glorious than the former, and extends itself much wider.

5And the meat offering shall be an ephah for a ram, and the meat offering for the lambs as 9he shall be able to give, and an hina of oil to an ephah.

9 That is, according to his ability, according as the Lord shall have blessed him, or according as he shall have received of the Lord. Compare verses 7 and 11; Deut. 16:17.

a 13 logs; about 1.5 gallons or 5.7 liters

6And in the day of the 10new moon it shall be a 11young bullock without blemish, and six lambs, and a ram: they shall be without blemish.

10 Compare this new ordinance with Num. 28:11, etc. The old was greater because the light (as some interpret it) was then much less.

11 Hebr. a son of a bullock.

7And he shall prepare a meat offering, an ephah for a bullock, and an ephah for a ram, and for the lambs according as his hand shall 12attain unto, and an hin of oil to an ephah.

12 Or, shall have obtained. Compare verse 5, and the manner of speech with Num. 6:21. Likewise Lev. 5:11; 12:8; 14:21; 25:28, etc.

8And when the prince shall enter, he shall go in by the way of the porch of that gate, and he shall 13go forth 14by the way thereof.

13 Or, go on.

14 Or, his way.

9¶But when the people of the land shall come before the LORD in the solemn feasts, he that entereth in by the way of the north gate to worship shall go out by the way of the south gate; and he that entereth by the way of the south gate shall go forth by the way of the north gate: he shall not 15return by the way of the gate whereby he came in, but shall 16go forth over against it.

15 Some compare this with Luke 17:32; 1 Cor. 9:24; Philip. 3:13, 14. Likewise Gal. 4:9; 5:7; 2 Peter 2:20, 21, 22.

16 Other, they shall go forth right over against it.

10And the prince in the 17midst of them, when they go in, shall go in; and when they 18go forth, shall go forth.

17 Namely, among the people of the land.

18 Other, go on, and so immediately again.

11And in the feasts and in the solemnities the meat offering shall be an ephah to a bullock, and an ephah to a ram, and to the lambs as 19he is able to give, and an hin of oil to an ephah.

19 As verses 5 and 7.

12Now when the prince shall prepare a voluntary burnt offering or peace offerings voluntarily unto the LORD, one shall then open him the gate that looketh toward the east, and he shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, as he did on the sabbath day: then he shall go forth; and after his going forth one shall shut the gate.

13Thou shalt daily prepare a burnt offering unto the LORD of a lamb 20of the first year without blemish: thou shalt prepare it 21every morning.

20 Hebr. a son of his year.

21 Hebr. in the morning, in the morning; that is, every morning. Also in the sequel. Compare this ordinance with Num. 28:3, 4. Here no mention is made of the evening sacrifice. Compare Heb. 9:26.

14And thou shalt prepare a meat offering for it every morning, the sixth part of an ephah, and the third part of an hin of oil, to temperb with the fine flour; a meat offering continually by a 22perpetual ordinance unto the LORD.

b mix

22 Hebr. ordinance of eternity.

15Thus shall they prepare the lamb, and the meat offering, and the oil, every morning for a 23continual burnt offering.

23 Hebr. burnt offering (properly ascension) of continuance.

16¶Thus saith the Lord GOD; If the prince give a gift unto any of his 24sons, the inheritance thereof shall 25be his sons'; it shall be their possession by inheritance.

24 Or, children. As for the Lord Christ, He gives to His elect and true children durable and everlasting gifts, an everlasting inheritance, and that of His own, for, all that the Father has is His, John 16:15, and He is Heir of all things, Heb. 1:2, doing with His own what He will, Mat. 20:15; but unto others, who do serve also as servants in His house, He gives temporal gifts. Compare Mat. 7:22, 23; 13:21, 23; 25:14, etc.; Luke 19:13, etc., and see John 8:35, etc. It may also be a lesson for christian magistrates, of liberality and rewarding of good services, also of justice towards their subjects. And further in general a lesson of enjoying of our own possessions, and such as are justly and honestly obtained, etc.

25 That is, it shall continue to be his sons, they shall keep it. Thus in the sequel.

17But if he give a gift of his inheritance to one of his servants, then it shall be his to the 26year of liberty; after it shall return to the prince: but his inheritance shall be his sons' for them.

26 Otherwise called the year of jubile. See Lev. 25:10, etc.

18Moreover the prince shall not take of the people's inheritance by oppression, 27to thrust them out of their possession; but he shall give his sons inheritance out of his own possession: that my people be not scattered every man from his possession.

27 Or, to rob them of.

19¶After he brought me through the entry, which was at the side of the gate, into the 28holy chambers 29of the priests, which looked toward the north: and, behold, there was a place on the two sides 30westward.

28 Hebr. chambers of holiness.

29 Or, belonging to the priests.

30 Hebr. toward the sea.

20Then said he unto me, This is the place where the priests shall boil the 31trespass offering and the sin offering, where they shall bake the meat offering; that they bear them not out into the utter court, 32to sanctify the people.

31 That is, the flesh of those sacrifices, also verse 24. Hebr. trespass and sin. See Lev. 4 on verse 3. Hereby is typified the work of the ministry in all the particular churches and flocks of Christ, where the faithful teachers and pastors do feed themselves and the sheep of Christ with the wholesome and saving doctrine of the Gospel, and prepare, present, and apply it unto the people, together with the administration of the holy sacraments, and christian church government, according to the exhortations Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 5:2, etc. See also Mat. 24:45; John 21:15, 16, 17; 1 Tim. 3:13; 4:16; Revelation 2; 3.

32 That is, whereby the people would be sanctified; which must not be, since God had in a special manner chosen and sanctified the priests for the work of His holy ministry. Compare Ezek. 44 on verse 19.

21Then he brought me forth into the utter court, and caused me to pass by the four corners of the court; and, behold, 33in every corner of the court there was a court.

33 Hebr. a court in a corner of the court, a court in a corner of the court, that is, in every corner of the great court there was a little court.

22In the four corners of the court there were courts 34joined of forty cubits long and thirty broad: these four 35corners were of one measure.

34 Or, smoke-places. Hebr. as if one would say chimneyed, or smoked, that is, made with chimneys or smoke-openings. Other, joined, as kitchens are often joined to the building, but this cannot take place without the exchange of a letter in the Hebrew word.

35 Understand the aforementioned four kitchens which were in the corners of the court. Hebr. squared or cornered.

23And there was a 36row of building round about 37in them, round about them four, and it was 38made with 39boiling places under the 40rows round about.

36 The Hebrew word signifies elsewhere a row, or, an high building, that goeth all along like a row. Some understand it not of a wall, but of an high sloping roof unto a protection from the boiling.

37 In the kitchens, cornered courts.

38 Or, there were made, etc.

39 Or, kitchens.

40 Other, under the portals or courts, meaning, that they boiled their meat below, as in cellars, and did eat above.

24Then said he unto me, These are the 41places of them that boil, where the ministers of the house shall boil the 42sacrifice of the people.

41 Hebr. the house or the place of the cooking ones, of them that cook.

42 That is, the flesh of the sacrifice, as verse 20.
