MOSES,

Exodus 6

1God reneweth his promise by his name JEHOVAH: 10he sendeth Moses to Pharaoh. 14The genealogy of Reuben, 15of Simeon, 16and of Levi, of whom came Moses and Aaron. 28Moses in answer to God's charge pleadeth his defect of speech.

1THEN the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: 1for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.

1 That is, through My power and compulsion. See the fulfillment thereof in Exodus 12; 13.

2And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am 2the LORD:

2 See Gen. 2:4.

3And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of 3God 4Almighty, but 5by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.

3 Hebr. in God the Almighty. Other, with the Name God almighty.

4 That is, such a One as is able and sufficient to do good, and to perform all His promises, Gen. 17:1.

5 God implies here, that this, His Name Jehovah and that which imparts and signifies, was not so fully known unto them, as it would be made known henceforward to them, by the real fulfillment of His promises, and especially by the wonderful deliverance of them out of Egypt, and bringing them at length into the land of the promises. Otherwise God called Himself JEHOVAH long before, and by that Name confirmed His promises as is to be seen in Gen. 2:4, 7, 8, 9; 15:7; 26:24; 28:12, etc.

4And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers.

5And I have also heard 6the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in 7bondage; and I 8have remembered my covenant.

6 Or, the moan, the complaint.

7 Or, make to serve, enslave.

8 This is spoken after the manner of men, as Gen. 8:1.

6Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you 9with a stretched out arm, and 10with great judgments:

9 That is, by My great and extraordinary power; spoken after the manner of men of God.

10 That is, executing great and terrible punishments upon the Egyptians to the manifestation of My righteousness.

7And I will take you to me 11for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall 12know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

11 That is, such a one shall know and serve Me, and enjoy by Me all manner of temporal and spiritual mercies and benefits, to their everlasting salvation.

12 Other, find, or, acknowledge, experience.

8And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did 13swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: 14I am the LORD.

13 Hebr. lift up my hand. That is, made an oath. See Gen. 14:22; Isa. 62:8.

14 Other, I, the LORD; as if God said, I am able and shall give you what I promise. See verse 2.

9¶And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for 15anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

15 The Israelites were so dismayed, and kept under, that they would rather continue under the Egyptian slavery than that they desire of Moses to proceed for their deliverance, fearing worse would yet come upon them. See Exod. 14:12, and Job 21 on verse 4.

10And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

11Go in, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.

12And Moses spake before the LORD, saying, Behold, the children of Israel have not hearkened unto me; how then shall Pharaoh hear me, 16who am of uncircumciseda lips?

16 That is, I am not eloquent. Hence Moses would infer that God ought not to send him to Pharaoh, but one who was more able and eloquent; see Exod. 4:10. The same complaint Isaiah made likewise, Isa. 6:5, and Jeremiah, Jer.1:6.

a Exod. 4:10; 6:29.

13And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, and gave them a charge unto the children of Israel, and unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

26These are that Aaron and Moses, to whom the LORD said, Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt 27according to their armies.

27 God the Lord would have Moses to lead forth the people, not in a confused manner, but according to the order of their present abodes and habitations, for they were not as yet divided according to their tribes.

27These are they which spake to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt: these are that Moses and Aaron.

28¶And it came to pass on the day when the LORD spake unto Moses in the land of Egypt,

29That the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, I am the LORD: speak thou unto Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say unto thee.

30And Moses said before the LORD, Behold, Ikam of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh hearken unto me?
