Exodus 27

1The altar of burnt offering with the vessels thereof. 9The court of the tabernacle inclosed with hangings and pillars. 18The measure of the court, and the furniture of brass. 20The oil for the lamp.

1AND thou shalt make an altaraof shittim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be 1foursquare: and the height thereof shall be three cubits.

a Exod. 38:1.

1 Namely, for its length and breadth, but the height of it was but three cubits.

2And thou shalt make the 2horns of it upon the four corners 3thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and 4thou shalt overlay it with brass.

2 These horns served not only for an ornament to the altar, but likewise, as it seems, to keep things laid upon it from falling down.

3 That is, out of the same piece, not pieced, nor joined together; this phrase occurs often in this relation.

4 This altar was so covered with copper all over, both without and within, that there was no wood to be seen about it, for to be and remain the more free and safe from the fire upon it.

3And thou shalt make his pans to receive his ashes, and his 5shovels, and his 6basons, and his 7fleshhooks, and his firepans: 8all the vessels thereof thou shalt make of brass.

5 Or, spades. Other, besoms.

6 Namely, to receive the blood therein of the burnt offerings, and to make the sprinkling with it.

7 Or, forks, instruments with teeth, fit for to take up the flesh out of the pots, as 1 Sam. 2:13, 14.

8 Hebr. to (or, for) all his vessels thou shalt make (or, prepare) copper.

4And thou shalt make for it 9a grate of network of brass; and upon the net shalt thou make four brasen rings in the four corners thereof.

9 This was a broad copper plate with many small holes in it, for the blood, and the ashes and small coals, or the like, to pass through easily; and this was the hearth of the altar whereon the fire was laid to burn.

5And thou shalt put it under the compass of the altar beneath, that the net may be even to the midst of the altar.

6And thou shalt make staves for the altar, staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with brass.

7And the staves shall be put into the rings, and the staves shall be upon the two sides of the altar, to bear it.

8Hollow with boards shalt thou make it: as 10it was shewed thee in the mount, so shall 11they make it.

10 Hebr. he shewed, namely, God the Lord.

11 Namely, the master workmen, or, artificers.

9¶And thoub shalt make 12the court of the tabernacle: for the south side southward there shall be hangings for the court of fine twined linen of an hundred cubits long for one side:

b Exod. 38:9.

12 This was an open place to which the people daily resorted to offer sacrifice, and to exercise the public worship, Psalm 100:4; 116:17, 18, 19.

10And the twenty 13pillars 14thereof and their twenty sockets shall be of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their filletscshall be of silver.

13 These pillars served to fasten the hangings to them with silver hooks, as also for ornament. In Exod. 38:17, 19 it is stated that their heads or chapiters were covered with silver.

14 Namely, of the court.

c ornamental bands*

11And likewise for the north side in length there shall be hangings of an hundred cubits long, and his twenty pillars and their twenty sockets of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets of silver.

12¶And for the breadth of the court on 15the west side shall be hangings of fifty cubits: their pillars ten, and their sockets ten.

15 Hebr. at the seaside, or, on the side of the sea. See Gen. 12:8.

13And the breadth of the court on the east side eastward shall be fifty cubits.

14The hangings of one 16side of the gate shall be fifteen cubits: their pillars three, and their sockets three.

16 Hebr. shoulder. Understand here and in the next verse the sides of the court.

15And on the other side shall be hangings fifteen cubits: their pillars three, and their sockets three.

16¶And for the gate of the court shall be an hanging of twenty cubits, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework: and their pillars shall be four, and their sockets four.

17All the pillars round about the court shall be filletedd with silver; their hooks shall be of silver, and their sockets of brass.

d ornamented with encircling bands*

18¶The length of the court shall be an hundred cubits, and the breadth fifty 17every where, and the height 18five cubits of fine twined linen, and 19their sockets of brass.

17 Hebr. fifty and fifty; that is, fifty on each side.

18 Half the height of the tabernacle, Exod. 26:16.

19 Namely, of the pillars.

19All the vessels of the tabernacle in all the service thereof, and all the pins thereof, and all the 20pins of the court, shall be of brass.

20 Or, nails; serving to fasten and close the entire frame, and all the parts thereof completely together.

20¶And thoue shalt command the children of Israel, that they 21bring thee pure oil olive beaten 22for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.

e Lev. 24:2.

21 Hebr. take thee; that is, take and bring. See Gen. 12:15.

22 There were seven burning lamps, or lights, on the candlestick, Exod. 25:37.

21In the tabernacle of the congregation without the vail, which is before 23the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall order it from evening to morning before the LORD: it shall be a statute for ever unto their generations on the behalf of the children of Israel.

23 That is, the ark of the testimony.
