THE SECOND BOOK OF

MOSES,

Exodus 11

1God's message to the Israelites to borrow jewels of their neighbours. 4Moses threateneth Pharaoh with the death of the firstborn. 9Pharaoh is still hardened.

1AND the LORD 1said unto Moses, Yet will I bring 2one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely 3thrust you out hence altogether.

1 Before Pharaoh had driven away Moses from him with threats; Exod. 10:28. This was the reason why Moses gave Pharaoh such a resolute answer, Exod. 10:29.

2 See of this plague the verses 4 and 5.

3 Hebr. thrusting out thrust out. See the fulfillment hereof, Exod. 12:31, 32, 33.

2Speak now in the ears of the 4people, anda let 5every man 6borrow of 7his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.

4 Namely, of the Israelites.

a Exod. 3:22; 12:35.

5 See Exod. 3:22.

6 Or, lend.

7 Namely, of his Egyptian neighbor.

3And the LORD gaveb the people 8favour in the sight of the Egyptians. 9Moreover the man Moses was 10very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight 11of the people.

b Exod. 12:36.

8 That is, grace. See of this phrase, Gen. 39:21.

9 This was the reason why Pharaoh did not dare to meddle with Moses, fearing it might cause an insurrection among the people.

10 That is, in very great repute.

11 Understand, of the Egyptian people.

4And Moses 12said, Thus 13saith the LORD, About midnight willc I go out into the midst of Egypt:

12 Namely, to Pharaoh, before he parted from him, verse 8, for, this is the continuation of Moses’ reply, Exod. 10:29.

13 Namely, when He sent me to you this last time.

c Exod. 12:29.

5And alld the 14firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh 15that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is 16behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.

d Exod. 12:12.

14 That which God here threatens, He afterwards executes by His angel, Exod. 12:23, 29.

15 That is, who would succeed him in the kingdom; as 1 Kings 2:24, and 1 Chron. 28:5.

16 Therefore it states here behind the mill, because those who used the millstones, pushed the grinding stones in front of their whole body with their hands. See Exod. 12:29; Judges 16:21; Isa. 47:1, 2.

6And there shall be 17a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.

17 Both among the parents, whose children shall die, and among the children, who, hearing and seeing it, shall be afraid that it may apply to them, as it uses to happen in such dreadful times of the plagues.

7But against any of the children of Israel 18shall not a dog move his tongue, against 19man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.

18 That is, it shall be so still and quiet among them, that the very dogs, which are roused by the least noise, shall not so much as bark once. See a similar expression, Joshua 10:21.

19 That is, neither against people, nor against the beasts.

8Ande all these thy servants shall come down 20unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that 21follow thee: and after that 22I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh 23in a great anger.

e Exod. 12:30.

20 Namely, being sent unto me from you.

21 Hebr. which is at thy feet, that is, which follow you, or are guided and governed by you, obeying your commands. See a similar phrase, Judges 8:5; 1 Kings 20:10; 2 Kings 3:9.

22 Understand additionally: both all the people of Israel, together with all that we have, and all what we shall be pleased to take along with us.

23 Moses is zealous for the glory of God. Otherwise he was a very meek man, Num. 12:3.

9And the LORD 24said unto Moses, Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you; that 25my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.

24 Namely, Exod. 3:19; 10:1, and elsewhere.

25 That is, My wonderful plagues.

10And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: andf the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he 26would not let the children of Israel go out of his land.

f Exod. 9:16; Rom. 9:17.

26 But being forced thereunto. See Exod. 3:19; 6:1.
