Deuteronomy 3

1The story of the conquest of Og king of Bashan; the size of his bed; 12the distribution of the conquered lands to the two tribes and half; 18the charge given to these by Moses, 21and his exhortation to Joshua; 23his prayer that he might enter into the land, which is not accepted; but he is permitted to see the land.

1THEN we turned,a and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

a Num. 21:33; Deut. 29:7.

2And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him asb thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

b Num. 21:34.

3So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until 1none was left to him remaining.

1 Hebr. no remnants or that remained.

4And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the 2region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

2 Hebr. cord, or, rope, line, as also verse 13, because lands in those times were wont to be measured and divided by lines or cords.

5All these cities were fenced with high 3walls, gates, and bars; beside 4unwalled towns a great many.

3 Hebr. wall, gate and bar.

4 Other, cities of country-men, that is, country-towns.

6And we utterly 5destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.

5 See Deut. 2:34.

7But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.

8And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this 6side Jordan, from the river of 7Arnon unto mount 8Hermon;

6 The east side.

7 In the south.

8 In the north. Hebr. Chermon.

9(Which 9Hermon the Sidonians call 10Sirion; and the Amorites call it 11Shenir;)

9 Called also Sion. See Deut. 4:48; Judges 3 on verse 3; 1 Chron. 5:23.

10 Hebr. Schirion.

11 Hebr. Schenir, that is, (as some perceive) snow mountain; because this mountain, in regard of the great height of it, was always covered with snow, as are the Alps.

10All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11For 12only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in 13Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine 14cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

12 This serves to magnify the power of the LORD which He has manifested in the destruction of this giant and all his people.

13 The capital city of the Ammonites. See 2 Sam. 12:26. The meaning is, that this bedstead was certainly in existence there.

14 See Gen. 6 on verse 15.

12And this land, which we possessedc at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

c Num. 32:33.

13And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.

1415Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of 16Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them after his own name, Bashan-17havoth-jair, 18unto this day.

15 See Num. 32 on verse 41.

16 Or, of the Gershirites. Hebr. Geschuri, that is, the Geshurite. Geshur and Maacah were both situated on the north borders of Canaan. See 2 Sam. 3 on verse 3; 2 Sam. 10:6.

17 Hebr. Ghavvot, that is, Jair’s towns, villages or Jair’s farms. See Num. 32:41.

18 Understand: they are so called, they have kept this name; so elsewhere often.

15And I gave 19Gilead unto 20Machir.

19 Understand a part of Gilead, by comparing with verses 12 and 13. It seems that this had properly the name of Gilead and the portion of the Reubenites and Gadites the half of Gilead, verse 13, and Jair’s part or portion Havoth-jair, verse 14. As some maps have it also. Compare also 2 Kings 10:33.

20 This Machir was the son of Manasseh, Gen. 50:23.

16And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon 21half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

21 That is, between the brook, etc.

17The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from 22Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the 23salt sea, under 24Ashdoth-pisgah eastward.

22 See Num. 34:11; Joshua 12:3. Afterward called the lake of Gennesaret, Luke 5:1, etc.

23 See Gen. 14 on verse 3.

24 Other, beneath the descent of the hill east ward. According to some maps, the city of Ashdoth-pisgah is situated between the high mountain Pisgah and mount Peor. See also Joshua 12:3; 13:20.

18¶And I 25commanded youd at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.

25 This commandment concerned the Reubenites, Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh.

d Num. 32:20.

19But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;

20Until the LORD have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the LORD your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.

21¶And I commandede Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto these 26two kings: so shall the LORD do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.

e Num. 27:18.

26 Namely, king Sihon and king Og.

22Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.

23And I besought the LORD at that time, saying,

24O Lord 27GOD, thou hast begun to shew 28thy servant thy 29greatness, and 30thy mighty hand: for whatf God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

27 In the Hebrew the letters of the word Jehovah are found, but with the points of the word Elohim; as also elsewhere.

28 That is, unto me, who am Thy servant.

29 See Deut. 11:2.

30 Or, thy hand, which is strong.

f Psalm 89:7, 8, 9.

25I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that 31goodly mountain, 32and Lebanon.

31 That is, fair and fruitful.

32 Other, to wit, Lebanon.

26Butg the LORD was wroth with me 33for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, 34Let it suffice thee; 35speak no more unto me of this matter.

g Deut. 1:37; 31:2; 34:4.

33 See Deut. 1:37.

34 Or, Thou hast enough. Compare herewith 2 Cor. 12:8, 9.

35 Hebr. add not or do not go on to speak.

27Get thee up into the 36top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and 37behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

36 Hebr. the head.

37 Namely, towards the land of Canaan.

28But 38charge Joshua, and encourage him, and 39strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

38 That is, instruct and inform him in all things that are required for the execution of his office, according to My direction.

39 That is, encourage him and make him hearty and valiant against all occurring difficulties.

29So we abode in the valley over against 40Beth-peor.

40 Other, the house of Peor. Some maps have here a city, called Beth-peor, situated at the foot of a mountain with a similar name, close to Pisgah and Nebo.
