1NOW the sons of Issacharawere, Tola, and Puah, 1Jashub, and Shimron, four.

a Gen. 46:13; Num. 26:23.

1 He is called in Gen. 46:13 Job.

2And the sons of Tola; Uzzi, and Rephaiah, and Jeriel, and Jahmai, and Jibsam, and Shemuel, heads of their father's house, to wit, of Tola: they were valiant men of might in their generations; whose number was 2in the days of David two and twenty thousand and six hundred.

2 Namely, when David caused the people to be numbered by Joab, 2 Sam. 24:1. Others understand this of the order that was made concerning the entire army of the Israelites in David’s time, 1 Chron. 27:1.

3And the sons of Uzzi; Izrahiah: and the sons of Izrahiah; Michael, and Obadiah, and Joel, Ishiah, five: all of them chief men.

4And with them, by their generations, after the house of their fathers, were bands of soldiers for war, six and thirty thousand men: for they 3had many wives and sons.

5And their brethren among all the families of Issachar were valiant men of might, reckoned in all by their genealogies fourscore and seven thousand.

7And the sons of Bela; Ezbon, and Uzzi, and Uzziel, and Jerimoth, and Iri, five; heads of the house of their fathers, mighty men of valour; and were reckoned by their genealogies twenty and two thousand and thirty and four.

8And the sons of Becher; Zemira, and Joash, and Eliezer, and Elioenai, and Omri, and Jerimoth, and Abiah, and Anathoth, and Alameth. All these are the sons of Becher.

9And the number of them, after their genealogy by their generations, heads of the house of their fathers, mighty men of valour, was twenty thousand and two hundred.

10The sons also of Jediael; Bilhan: and the sons of Bilhan; Jeush, and Benjamin, and Ehud, and Chenaanah, and Zethan, and Tharshish, and Ahishahar.

11All these the sons of Jediael, by the heads 4of their fathers, mighty men of valour, were seventeen thousand and two hundred soldiers, fit to go out for war and battle.

4 That is, of their fathers’ houses or families.

125Shuppim also, and Huppim, 6the children of Ir, and Hushim, the sons of Aher.

5 They are called Muppin, and Huppin, Gen. 46:21. Also, Shupham, and Hupham, Num. 26:39.

6 Other, the children of the city, (that is, who dwelt in the city); but Hushim in another land, which is so to be understood that the two first were born in one city, but the two others somewhere in another country. Hebr. children of Aher, or, a son of another (person, namely, of Dan, Gen. 46:23, or land). How he comes to be here numbered among the children of Benjamin is uncertain.

13¶The sons of Naphtali; Jahziel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shallum, the 7sons of 8Bilhah.

7 Properly nephews, for, Bilhah was the mother of Naphtali, whom she bare unto Jacob, Gen. 30:7, 8.

8 Bilhah was Rachel’s maid, Gen. 30:3, 4.

14¶The 9sons of Manasseh; Ashriel, whom she bare: (but his concubine the Aramitess bare 10Machir the father of Gilead:

9 That is, the posterity of Manasseh, for, Ashriel was properly the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, Num. 26:29, 30.

10 Machir was Manasseh’s first born, Joshua 17:1. As for the word father, see 1 Chron. 2 on verse 21.

15And Machir took to wife the sister of Huppim and Shuppim, whose sister's name was Maachah;) and the name of the second was Zelophehad: and Zelophehad had 11daughters.

11 Namely, only daughters, no sons, Num. 27:1.

16And Maachah the wife of Machir bare a son, and she called his name Peresh; and the name of his brother was Sheresh; and his sons were Ulam and Rakem.

17And the 12sons of Ulam; 13Bedan. These were the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh.

12 Here the word sons is put in the plural number, but here only one child is named; also likewise 1 Chron. 2:31, 34.

18And 14his sister Hammoleketh bare Ishod, and Abi-ezer, and Mahalah.15

14 Namely, of Gilead.

15 Understand herewith likewise Shemida, from the following verse. See Num. 26:32.

19And the sons of Shemida were, Ahian, and Shechem, and Likhi, and Aniam.

20¶And the sonsc of Ephraim; Shuthelah, and Bered his son, and Tahath his son, and Eladah his son, and Tahath his son,

21¶And Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead, whom the 16men of Gath that were born in that land slew, 17because they came down to take away their cattle.

16 These were Philistines, and what is written here happened while the children of Israel were still dwelling in Egypt, for, Ephraim, who was yet alive at that time, (as it appears in verse 22), died in Egypt. See Acts 7:15, 16.

17 Other, when they, namely, the Gethites.

2218And Ephraim their father mourned many days, and his 19brethren came to comfort him.

18 Namely, because his children were slain.

19 That is, his kinsmen, or kindred, for, Ephraim had but one brother, namely, Manasseh.

23¶And when he 20went in to his wife, she conceived, and bare a son, and he called his name 21Beriah, because 22it went evil with his house.

20 Namely, in order that he might receive children again in the place of those who were slain.

21 Or, Bria, that is, in evil, or in mischief, or in misery.

22 Namely, because the Philistines of Gath had slain her sons.

24(And 23his daughter was Sherah, who built Beth-horon the nether, and the upper, and Uzzen-sherah.)

23 Namely, of Beriah.

25And Rephah was 24his son, also Resheph, and Telah 25his son, and Tahan his son,

26 He was the captain or prince of the tribe of Ephraim when the Israelites were mustered in the wilderness by Moses, in the beginning of the second year after they were come out of Egypt. See Num. 1:1, 10.

28¶And 28theird possessions and habitations were, Beth-el and the 29towns thereof, and eastward 30Naaran, and westward Gezer, with the towns thereof; Shechem also and the towns thereof, unto 31Gaza and the towns thereof:

29And by the 32borders of the children of Manasseh, Beth-shean and her towns, Taanach and her towns, Megiddo and her towns, Dor and her towns. In these dwelt the children of Joseph the son of Israel.

32 Hebr. hands. He wants to say that Beth-shean, etc., was situated on the borders of the children of Manasseh. See Joshua 17:11.

30¶Thee sons of Asher; Imnah, and Isuah, and Ishuai, and Beriah, and Serah their sister.

31And the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel, who is the father of Birzavith.

32And Heber begat Japhlet, and Shomer, and Hotham, and Shua their sister.

33And the sons of Japhlet; Pasach, and Bimhal, and Ashvath. These are the children of Japhlet.

34And the sons of 33Shamer; Ahi, and Rohgah, Jehubbah, and Aram.34

33 In verse 32 he is called Shomer.

34 Understand herewith: and Helem, from the next verse.

35And the sons of his brother Helem; Zophah, and Imna, and Shelesh, and Amal.

36The sons of Zophah; Suah, and Harnepher, and Shual, and Beri, and Imrah,

37Bezer, and Hod, and Shamma, and Shilshah, and Ithran, and Beera.

38And the sons of 35Jether; Jephunneh, and Pispah, and Ara.36

35 In verse 37 he is called Ithran.

36 Understand herewith also Ulla, from the next verse.

39And the sons of Ulla; Arah, and Haniel, and Rezia.

40All these were the children of Asher, heads of their father’s house, 37choice and mighty men of valour, chief of the princes. And the number throughout the genealogy of them that were apt to the war and to battle was twenty and six thousand men.
