1The sons of Israel. 3The sons of Judah. 13The children of Jesse. 18The posterity of Caleb the son of Hezron. 21The posterity of Hezron by the daughter of Machir. 25Jerahmeel's posterity. 34Sheshan's posterity. 42Another branch of Caleb's posterity. 50The posterity of Caleb the son of Hur.

1THESE area the sons of Israel; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun,

a Gen. 29:32; 30:5; 35:18, 22; 46:8.

2Dan, Joseph, and Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

3¶The 1sonsb of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah: which three were born unto him of the daughter of Shua the Canaanitess. And Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the sight of the LORD; and he slew him.

1 Although Judah was not the eldest among Jacob’s children, yet the writer of this book begins the description of the genealogy of the children of Jacob from Judah, both in respect of the royal dignity, which was promised to his posterity, Gen. 49:8, and also because Christ would be born out of the tribe of Judah.

b Gen. 38:3; 46:12; Num. 26:19.

4Andc Tamar his daughter in law bare him Pharez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.

c Gen. 38:28, 29; Mat. 1:3.

5The sonsd of Pharez; Hezron, and Hamul.

d Gen. 46:12.

6And the sons of Zerah; 2Zimri, and Ethan, and Heman, and Calcol, 3and Dara: five of them in all.

2 Joshua 7:1 he is called Zabdi, and was the father of Carmi, of whom is spoken in verse 7.

3 He is called Darda in 1 Kings 4:31.

7And the sons of Carmi; 4Achar, thee5troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the thing accursed.

4 Joshua 7:1 he is called Achan, but here Achar, that is, troubler, or disturber. See Joshua 7:25.

e Joshua 7:25.

5 Or, disturber.

86And the sons of Ethan; Azariah.

6 Here mention is made of sons, or children, in the plural number, although there is but one named; also Gen. 46:23.

9The sons also of Hezron, that were born unto him; Jerahmeel, and 7Ram, and 8Chelubai.

7 He is called Aram, Mat. 1:3; Luke 3:33.

8 Other, Caleb, verses 18, 42.

10Andf Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon, princeg of the children of Judah;

f Ruth 4:19; Mat. 1:3, 4.

g Num. 1:7; 2:3.

11And Nahshon begat 9Salma, and Salma begat Boaz,

9 Ruth 4:21 and Mat. 1:4 he is called Salmon.

12And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse,

13¶And Jesse begat his firstborn 10Eliab, and Abinadab the second, and 11Shimma the third,

10 Other, Elihu, 1 Chron. 27:18.

11 Called also Shammah, 1 Sam. 16:9.

14Nethaneel the fourth, Raddai the fifth,

15Ozem the sixth, David 12the seventh:

12 1 Sam. 16:10, 11; 17:12, there are counted eight sons of Jesse. It may be that one of them died without leaving any children behind, or that he was here left out for other reasons unknown to us.

16Whose sisters were Zeruiah, and 13Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah; 14Abishai, and Joab, and Asahel, three.

13 In 2 Sam. 17:25 the Hebrew is Abigal.

14 Or, Absai.

17And Abigail bare Amasa: and the father of Amasa was 15Jether the Ishmeelite.

15 Other, Ithra; he is called here an Ishmaelite because he was of Ishmael’s family, but in 2 Sam. 17:25 he is called an Israelite because he had embraced the religion of Israel.

18¶And 16Caleb the son of Hezron begat children of Azubah his wife, and of Jerioth: her 17sons are these; Jesher, and Shobab, and Ardon.

16 He is not that Caleb, whom Moses sent forth to spy out the land of Canaan, Num. 13:6, for, he was the son of Jephunneh, of whom mention will be made hereafter in 1 Chron. 4:15; but in this 18th verse is spoken of Caleb, the son of Hezron, and in verse 9 he is called Chelubai.

17 Namely, whom Caleb begat by Jerioth; for, the children whom he begat by Azubah are mentioned hereafter in verse 42.

19And when Azubah was dead, Caleb took unto him Ephrath, which bare him Hur.

20And Hurh begat Uri, and Uri begat Bezaleel.

h Exod. 31:2.

21¶And afterward Hezron 18went in to the daughter of 19Machir the 20father of Gilead, whom he married 21when he was threescore years old; and she bare him Segub.

18 That is, he lay with her, or, he knew her, as the Holy Scripture speaks in Gen. 4:1; 6:4.

19 This Machir was a son of Manasseh.

20 That is, according to the opinion of some, as much as head, ruler, governor, commander. So in sundry other places following. Others understand here by Gilead Machir’s own son. See Num. 26:29, 30. Also 1 Chron. 7:14.

21 Hebr. when he was a son of threescore years.

22And Segub begat 22Jair, who had three and twenty cities in the land of Gilead.

22 Who is called a son of Manasseh, Num. 32:41, because his grandmother was of the tribe of Manasseh, namely, a daughter of Machir, verse 21. But Machir was a son of Manasseh, Num. 26:29.

23And he took Geshur, and Aram, with the towns of Jair, from them, with 23Kenath, and 24the towns thereof, even threescore cities. 25All these belonged to the 26sons of Machir the father of Gilead.

23 One Nobah took this city, Num. 32:42. This was in former times a mighty city, as appears by this that it had 60 towns under her jurisdiction.

24 Hebr. daughters, as often elsewhere.

25 Namely, the sons of Hezron, who were just cited, namely, Segub, Jair, and also Nobah, mentioned in Num. 32:42.

26 They were the sons of Machir by the mother’s side, for, their mother was a daughter of Machir, but by the father’s side they were of the tribe of Judah.

24And after that Hezron was dead 27in 28Caleb-ephratah, then Abiah Hezron's wife bare him Ashur the father of 29Tekoa.

27 Other, when Caleb had, either married, or had taken Ephratah.

28 This seems to have been a place thus called by Caleb after himself and his wife’s name.

29 That is, of whom sprung the inhabitants of Tekoa. See of the city of Tekoa, 2 Sam. 14 on verse 2. It seems that this Ashur was born after his father Hezron’s death.

25¶And the sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron were, Ram the firstborn, and Bunah, and Oren, and Ozem, and 30Ahijah.

30 Other, by or of Ahijah, maintaining this to have been the mother of the children just named. See the sequel.

26Jerahmeel had also another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam.

27And the sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel were, Maaz, and Jamin, and Eker.

28And the sons of Onam were, Shammai, and Jada. And the sons of Shammai; Nadab, and Abishur.

29And the name of the wife of Abishur was Abihail, and she bare him Ahban, and Molid.

30And the sons of Nadab; Seled, and Appaim: but Seled died without children.

31And the sons of Appaim; Ishi. And the sons of Ishi; Sheshan. And the 31children of Sheshan; 32Ahlai.

31 Here and elsewhere besides, the word children is put in the plural number, whereas there is meant but one son or daughter, as verses 8, 34. Likewise also Gen. 21:7; 46:13 is the word children or sons in the plural number for one child or son.

32 This was a daughter, as appears by verses 34, 35.

32And the sons of Jada the brother of Shammai; Jether, and Jonathan: and Jether died without children.

33And the sons of Jonathan; Peleth, and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmeel.

34¶Now Sheshan had no sons, but 33daughters. And Sheshan had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Jarha.

33 That is, one daughter, called Ahlai, verse 31.

35And Sheshan gave his 34daughter to Jarha his servant to wife; and she bare him Attai.

34 Called Ahlai, verse 31.

36And Attai begat Nathan, and Nathan begat 35Zabad,

35 In 1 Chron. 11:41 he is mentioned again.

37And Zabad begat Ephlal, and Ephlal begat Obed,

38And Obed begat Jehu, and Jehu begat Azariah,

39And Azariah begat Helez, and Helez begat Eleasah,

40And Eleasah begat Sisamai, and Sisamai begat Shallum,

41And Shallum begat Jekamiah, and Jekamiah begat Elishama.

42¶Now the 36sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel were, Mesha his firstborn, which was the 37father of Ziph; and the sons of Mareshah the father of Hebron.

36 Namely, which he begat by Azubah; for, those whom he begat by Jerioth were mentioned in verse 18, and those whom he begat by Ephrath were specified in verses 19, 20.

37 That is, of whom the inhabitants of Ziph have taken their origin, which was situated in the tribe of Judah, Joshua 15:55. See the first annotation at 1 Sam. 23 on verse 19.

43And the sons of Hebron; Korah, and Tappuah, and Rekem, and Shema.

44And Shema begat Raham, the father of Jorkoam: and Rekem begat Shammai.

45And the son of Shammai was Maon: and Maon was the father of 38Beth-zur.

38 That is, of the Beth-zurites, or of the inhabitants of Beth-zur, a city situated in the tribe of Judah, Joshua 15:58.

46And Ephah, Caleb's concubine, bare Haran, and Moza, and Gazez: and Haran begat Gazez.

47And 39the sons of Jahdai; Regem, and Jotham, and Geshan, and Pelet, and Ephah, and Shaaph.

39 Other, And the children of Moza were Jahdai, whose children are Regem.

4840Maachah, Caleb’s concubine, bare Sheber, and Tirhanah.

40 Other, By the concubine Maachah, Caleb begat Sheber, etc.

49She bare also Shaaph the 41father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbenah, and the father of Gibea: and the daughter of Caleb was 42Achsah.

41 Madmannah, Machbenah and Gibea are names of cities in the tribe of Judah; so that by father in this verse must be understood the first inhabitant and planter of these cities, from whom the inhabitants of those cities descended, as verses 42, 45, 51, 52.

42 This one was the oldest daughter of the first Caleb.

50¶These were the sons of 43Caleb the son of Hur, the firstborn of Ephratah; Shobal 44the father of Kirjath-jearim,

43 This Caleb is the second of that name, a son of Hur, whom Caleb, the first of that name, had begotten by his concubine Ephrath, verse 19. So that this Caleb, of who mention is made in this 50th verse, was a son’s son or grandchild of the first Caleb.

44 That is, of the Israelites who dwelt at Kirjath-jearim.

51Salma the 45father of Beth-lehem, 46Hareph the father of Beth-gader.

45 Understand this as such, that this Salma was but in part father of the inhabitants of Bethlehem; for, Boaz, the Bethlehemite, was of another Salma, who was the son of Nahshon. See verse 11.

46 In 1 Chron. 4:4 he is called Penuel.

52And Shobal the father of Kirjath-jearim had sons; Haroeh, and 47half of the Manahethites.

47 Other, the half of the Menuchites, that is, of those who inhabited the half part of the land of Menuchoth. Now that Menuchoth was a certain region, some do gather it from 1 Chron. 8:6, where it is called Manahath. It was situated on the borders of Judah, Benjamin and Dan.

53And the families of Kirjath-jearim; the 48Ithrites, and the Puhites, and the Shumathites, and the Mishraites; of them came the Zareathites, and the Eshtaulites.

48 These and those who follow in this verse seem to have been families or houses in the city of Kirjath-jearim, who descended from Shobal.

5449The sons of Salma; Beth-lehem, and the Netophathites, 50Ataroth, the house of Joab, and half of the Manahethites, the Zorites.

49 That is, the posterity.

50 See Joshua 16:2, 5, 7.

55And the families 51of the scribes which dwelt at Jabez; the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and Suchathites. These are the 52Kenites that came of 53Hemath, the father of the house of 54Rechab.

51 These scribes came from Jethro, Moses’ father in law, and dwelt as strangers among the people of God. And that they might likewise be some way serviceable to the people of God, they were appointed to be scribes, that is, as public notaries, who made contracts and such like deeds and kept books of them. They are here mentioned, because they dwelt among the tribe of Judah. See Judges 1:16.

52 That is, the posterity of Jethro, Judges 1:16.

53 This Hemath seems to have been one of the most important among the Kenites, and a father of the Rechabites, who had taken up their dwelling in the tribe of Judah. See Jer. 35:2. And these Kenites are likewise distinguished from the Kenites that came of Chebar, and had taken up their dwelling place by Kedesh in the tribe of Naphtali or Manasseh. See Judges 4:11.

54 Of Rechab or the Rechabites see Jer. 35:2.
