THE FIRST BOOK OF THE
CHRONICLES

1 Chronicles 14

1Hiram sendeth timber and builders to David. 2The prosperity of David's kingdom. 3His additional wives and children after his accession to the kingdom. 8His two signal victories over the Philistines.

1NOW Hiram king of Tyre senta messengers to David, and timber of cedars, with masons and carpenters, to build him an house.

a 2 Sam. 5:11.

2And David perceived that the LORD had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was lifted up on high, because of his people Israel.

3¶And David took more wives at Jerusalem: and David begat more sons and daughters.

4Nowb these are the names 1of his children which he had in Jerusalem; 2Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon,

b 1 Chron. 3:5.

1 Other, of those that were born to him at Jerusalem.

2 1 Chronicles 3 there is some alteration in these names.

5And Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpalet,

6And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

7And Elishama, and 3Beeliada, and Eliphalet.

3Eliada, 2 Sam. 5:16.

8¶And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, 4all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, 5and went out against them.

4 Namely, with their forces to make war against him.

5 That is, he tarried not till they came and made war against him in his own land, but, having received a charge from God, went forth to meet them himself. Compare 2 Sam. 5:17, 19.

9And the Philistines came and spread themselves 6in the valley of Rephaim.

6 See Joshua 15:8; 2 Sam. 5:18. It was situated in the tribe of Judah.

10And David 7enquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.

7 Namely, by Abiathar the high priest, who put on the ephod, etc. See 1 Sam. 23:9; 30:7.

11So 8they came up to 9Baal-perazim; and David smote them there. Then David said, 10God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim.

8 Namely, the Israelites.

9 That is, rent-places, or breach-plains, or, the Lord of the rents, or of the breaches.

10 See 2 Sam. 5 on verse 20.

12And when they had left their 11gods there, David 12gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.

11 2 Sam. 5:21 they are called idols.

12 Hebr. said.

13And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad 13in the valley.

13 Understand the valley of Rephaim, which they invaded in an hostile manner, verse 9.

14Therefore David enquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and 14come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

14 Or, turn about from them. Compare 2 Sam. 5:23.

15And it shall be, when thou shalt hear 15a sound of going in 16the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.

15 That is, a noise as if somebody walked upon the tops of the trees. See 2 Sam. 5:24. Some understand this of the going of the angels that would fight for the Israelites.

16 Hebr. in the heads.

16David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer.

17And the fame of David went out into all lands; and 17the LORD 18brought the fear of him upon all nations.

17 That is, God made many of the pagan nations to be afraid, and to stand in awe of David.

18 Other, gave.
