THE FIRST BOOK OF THE
CHRONICLES

1 Chronicles 13

1David fetcheth the ark with great solemnity from Kirjath-jearim. 9Uzza being smitten, the ark is left at the house of Obed-edom.

1AND 1David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader.

1 Namely, after he had taken Jerusalem, and was become master of the fort Zion, into which he would cause the ark of the Lord to be brought.

2And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, 2If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let 3us send abroad unto our brethren every where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and 4suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us:

2 Hebr. If it be good to, or, with you.

3 Hebr. Let us burst out, or, break out, and let us send; that is, send forth far and into all places in Israel. It is a rhetorical phrase, or figurative kind of speech taken from the overflowing of waters that break out and overflow.

4 Hebr. of their suburbs.

3And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for 5we enquired not at it in the days of Saul.

5 That is, we heeded it not much, or minded it not greatly; for, in regard the ark was at Kirjath-jearim, and the tabernacle with the altar, on which the sacrifices were offered, were at Gibeon, therefore many of the Israelites made no great ado about the ark, but they performed their worship to God in the tabernacle which was without the ark.

4And all the congregation said that they would do so: for 6the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.

6 That is, this proposition of the king pleased all the people well, and they found it to be very good.

5So Davida gathered all Israel together, from 7Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering of Hemath, to bring 8the ark of God from 9Kirjath-jearim.

a 2 Sam. 6:1.

7 See of this river Shihor Joshua 13:3, 5. This was the uttermost border of the land of Canaan southward, as Hamath was the uttermost border of it northward; so that here the entire length of the land of Canaan is described.

8 This history is first described in 2 Sam. 6:2, etc.

9 The ark was brought to Kirjath-jearim when it came out of the land of the Philistine, 1 Sam. 6:21; 7:1.

6And David went up, and all Israel, to 10Baalah, that is, to Kirjath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the LORD, that dwelleth between the 11cherubims, whose name is called on it.

10 Baalah and Kirjath-jearim have been one and the same city, Joshua 15:9, 60.

11 See the annotation at 1 Sam. 4 on verse 4.

7And 12they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drave the cart.

12 This was against the express command of God, Num. 4:15, where the Lord commands that the priests shall carry the ark upon their shoulders. See 1 Chron. 15:2, 13.

8And David and all Israel played 13before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.

13 Who manifested His presence above the ark. Also verse 10. See 2 Sam. 6:2.

9¶And when they came unto the threshingfloor of 14Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen 15stumbled.

14 Other, Nachon, 2 Sam. 6:6.

15 See 2 Sam. 6 on verse 6.

10And the anger of the LORD was 16kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.

16 No one was permitted to touch the ark with his hand, save the priests only, Num. 4:15, of which family Uzza was not, although he was a Levite.

11And David was 17displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzza: wherefore that place is 18called 19Perez-uzza 20to this day.

17 See 2 Sam. 6 on verse 8.

18 Namely, David, as 2 Sam. 5:20.

19 That is, rent or breach of Uzza.

20 The sentence will be made full and perfect thus: which is so called unto this day.

12And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?

13So David broughtb not the ark home to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of 21Obed-edom the Gittite.

b 2 Sam. 6:10.

21 This Obed-edom was a Levite.

14And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.
