1ADAM,a1Sheth, Enosh,

a Gen. 5:3, 4.

1 In these first four verses the bare names of thirteen patriarchs, who lived before the flood, are only written down for brevity’s sake. And the words of these verses are thus to be taken and understood: of Adam was born Seth, of Seth was born Enos, and so on.

2Kenan, Mahalaleel, Jered,

3Henoch, Methuselah, Lamech,

4Noah, 2Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

2 From and by these three sons of Noah the world, as it were, is renewed and planted with men. See the annotation on Gen. 10:1.

5¶The sonsb of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

b Gen. 10:2, etc.

6And the sons of Gomer; Ashchenaz, and 3Riphath, and Togarmah.

3 Or, Diphath. In Gen. 10:3 Riphath is mentioned; the resh (ר) (R) and the daleth (ד) (D) are in more places put one for another, in regard of the likeness of the Hebrew letters. See verse 7.

7And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and 4Tarshish, Kittim, and 5Dodanim.

4 See the annotation on Gen. 10:4.

5 Thus it is likewise set down in Gen. 10:4, but some do read here Rodanim.

8¶The sons of Ham;c Cush, and Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.

c Gen. 10:6, etc.

9And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabta, and Raamah, and Sabtecha. And the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.

10And Cush begat Nimrod: 6he began to be mighty upon the earth.

6 After the flood he was the first who by force and violence brought cities and lands under his obedience and subjection. See further of Nimrod Gen. 10:9.

11And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,

12And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (of whomd came the Philistines,) and Caphthorim.

d Gen. 10:14.

13And Canaan begat Zidon his firstborn, and Heth,

14The Jebusite also, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite,

15And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,

16And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite.

17¶The sonse of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram, and 7Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Meshech.

e Gen. 10:22, etc.

7 Uz. Hul, Gether and Meshech (called Mash in Gen. 10:23) were Aram’s sons, and Shem was their grandfather. See Gen. 10:23. Therefore some place here these (namely, of Aram) sons were Uz, etc. And remember once for all, that the Hebrews give several names to one and the same person, as also to one and the same place, as is often found in the register of names recorded in this book, and elsewhere besides.

18And Arphaxad begat Shelah, and Shelah begat Eber.

19And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days 8the earth was divided: and his brother's name was Joktan.

8 Understand that the inhabitants of the earth were divided and distinguished one from another, when God confounded their languages at the building of the tower of Babel, Gen. 11:9, 16. Peleg is rendered: a division.

20And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,

21Hadoram also, and Uzal, and Diklah,

22And Ebal, and Abimael, and Sheba,

23And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.

249Shem,f Arphaxad, Shelah,

9 Understand after the name Shem, as also after the following name, the word begat; thus: Shem begat Arphaxad, Arphaxad begat Shelah, etc.

f Gen. 11:10, etc.; Luke 3:34.

25Eber, Peleg, Reu,

26Serug, Nahor, Terah,

2710Abram; the same is Abraham.

10 Why the name Abram was changed into Abraham, see Gen. 17:5.

28Theg sons of Abraham; Isaac, and Ishmael.

g Gen. 16:15; 21:2.

29¶These are their generations: Theh firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth; then Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,

h Gen. 25:13, etc.

30Mishma, and Dumah, Massa, Hadad, and Tema,

31Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael.

32¶Now the sonsi of Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she bare Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan; Sheba, and Dedan.

i Gen. 25:2.

33And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Henoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these are the sons of Keturah.

34And Abraham begat Isaac. The sonsj of Isaac; Esau and Israel.

j Gen. 25:21, 24, etc.

35¶Thek sons of Esau; Eliphaz, Reuel, and Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

k Gen. 36:10, and further, for, there this genealogy is mentioned.

36The sons of Eliphaz; Teman, and Omar, 11Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and 12Timna, and Amalek.

11Zepho, Gen. 36:11.

12 This seems to have been one of Eliphaz’ children, Gen. 36:12. Eliphaz’ concubine, which bare him Amalek, was also called Timna.

37The sons of Reuel; Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.

3813And the sons of Seir; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, and Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan.

13 See Gen. 36 on verse 20.

39And the sons of Lotan; Hori, and 14Homam: and Timna was Lotan's sister.

14Hemam, Gen. 36:22.

40The sons of Shobal; 15Alian, and Manahath, and Ebal, 16Shephi, and Onam. And the sons of Zibeon; Aiah, and Anah.

15Alvan, Gen. 36:23.

16 Other, Shepho, Gen. 36:23.

41The sons of Anah; Dishon. And the sons of Dishon; 17Amram, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

17 Other, Hemdan, Gen. 36:26.

42The sons of Ezer; Bilhan, and Zavan, and 18Jakan. The sons of 19Dishan; Uz, and Aran.

18 Other, Akan, Gen. 36:27.

19 Or, Dishon.

43¶Now these are the 20kings that reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel; Bela the son of Beor: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.

20 See Gen. 36:31, 32, etc.

44And when Bela was dead, Jobab the son of Zerah of 21Bozrah reigned in his stead.

21 See of this city the annotation on Gen. 36:33.

45And when Jobab was dead, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead.

46And when Husham was dead, Hadad the son of Bedad, which smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith.

47And when Hadad was dead, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.

48And when Samlah was dead, Shaul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead.

49And when Shaul was dead, Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.

50And when Baal-hanan was dead, 22Hadad reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was 23Pai; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of 24Matred, the 25daughter of Mezahab.

22Hadar, Gen. 36:39. See on verse 6.

23 Other, Pau, Gen. 36:39.

24Matred is a man’s name.

25 Other, granddaughter. She was Mezahab’s son’s or daughter’s daughter. Oftentimes children’s children, that is, nephews and nieces are called in Holy Scripture sons and daughters, as Exod. 2:20, 21.

51¶Hadad died also. And the dukes of Edom were; duke Timnah, duke 26Aliah, duke Jetheth,

26 Called also Alvah, Gen. 36:40.

52Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,

53Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar,

54Duke Magdiel, duke Iram. These are the dukes of Edom.
