Job 1

1Job's uprightness, family, wealth, and religious concern for his children. 6Satan appeareth before God, falsely accuseth Job, and obtaineth leave to tempt him. 13Job, receiving successive accounts of the calamities that deprived him of all his substance and his children, in his mourning blesseth God.

1THERE was a man in the land of ^aUz, whose name was ^bJob; and that man was ^cperfect and upright, and one that feared God, and ^d*eschewed evil.

2And there were ^eborn unto him seven sons and three daughters.

4And his ⁱsons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

5And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and ^jsanctified them, and ^krose up early in the morning, and ^loffered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, ^mIt may be that my sons have sinned, and ⁿcursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job ⁴continually.

6¶Now there was a ^oday when the ^psons of God came to ^qpresent themselves before the LORD, and ⁵Satan came also ⁶among them.

7And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From ^rgoing to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

9Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

10Hast not thou ^ymade an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast ^zblessed the work of his hands, and his ⁸substance is increased in the land.

12And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, ^dall that he hath is in thy ¹⁰power; only ^eupon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan ^fwent forth from the presence of the LORD.

13¶And there was a day ^gwhen his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

14And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

15And the ^hSabeans fell upon them , and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I ⁱonly am escaped alone to tell thee.

16^jWhile he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, ¹¹The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
